MOSCOW, Idaho - Playing in their final regular season match of 2009, the Boise State volleyball team was hoping to earn their second win of the season over the University of Idaho on Thursday evening. The Idaho Vandals (15-14, 11-5 WAC) were able to stop the visiting Broncos (7-21, 7-9 WAC) in a 3-0 sweep at Memorial Gym, splitting the regular season series between the two schools, 1-1.
Although the Broncos and Vandals played on Thursday evening, the two teams will have a quick turn around to face eachother on Monday, Nov. 23 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. The Vandals had secured the No. 3-seed for the tournament two weeks ago, while the Broncos were playing for their tournament seed in Moscow this evening. With the loss to Idaho, the Broncos will take the No. 6-seed in the tournament, matching them up with Idaho.
In Thursday's match, the Vandals were too much for the Broncos to handle, winning their three-set sweep, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 on senior night.
Boise State was held to a .040 hitting percentage and only 29 kills while Idaho hit .204 on the night with 37 kills. The Vandals, who are ranked No. 1 in the nation in blocks per set, proved their defensive strength at the net with 15 blocks to Boise State's five blocks.
The Broncos were led by junior Alisha Young who tallied 10 kills and earned an outstanding .409 hitting percentage on the night. Freshman Cailin Fellows added eight kills to the Broncos' efforts as well. Freshman Kersti Whitney stepped up the team's defense with 13 digs while sophomore Amanda Remy and senior Jeanene Rose added eight digs apiece. Remy also recorded the team's only service ace of the night. Sophomore Breann Nesselhuf tallied 21 assists while junior Sadie Maughan added a team-high of three blocks.
Sarah Conwell led the Vandals to victory with her 16 kills while Jennifer Feicht ran the offense with her 31 assists. Conwell and Debbie Pederson led the match in aces with two apiece while Meredith Rice added 19 digs in the win. Anna McKinney had an outstanding night at the net with 10 digs (one solo) while Feicht added six blocks.
The Boise State vs. Idaho match in the first round of the WAC tournament will be held at 6 p.m. (MT) in Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena.
