BOISE, Idaho In their final career match at Bronco Gym, Saturday, seniors Cameron Flunder and Jackie Stroud led the Bronco volleyball team to something that hadn’t been done since 1997, knock off the Nevada Wolf Pack.
The Broncos posted a four-game victory (30-18, 28-30, 30-20, 30-26), ending a losing streak against the Wolf Pack that began Nov. 14, 1997, and lasted 15 matches. With the win, the Broncos improved to 13-16 this season and 6-10 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Wolf Pack dropped to 15-14 overall and 9-7 within the conference.
“I am really proud of this team for the way they keep stepping up,” head coach Robin Davis said. “We had three matches in four days, and the way they finished off this regular season was amazing.”
Boise State picked the best time this season to start firing on all cylinders. For the first time since the beginning of conference play, the Broncos posted consecutive victories. After knocking off Utah State (3-1) and Nevada (3-1), the Broncos head into the WAC volleyball tournament on a run of two consecutive wins.
With 22 digs in her final home match, Stroud concluded the regular season ranked third on the WAC all-time list for career digs. The senior libero has 1,477 for her career, the most in Bronco history.
Flunder, the Broncos’ career leader in kills, posted 10 on the Wolf Pack and added six blocks in her final match at home. With 350 kills this season, Flunder now has 1,497 on her career, 216 more than anyone in Bronco history.
Junior Jamie Claussen led the Broncos with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .382. With 43 assists, sophomore Mandy Klein moved into seventh place on the all-time Bronco list for career assists. Stroud and junior Tiffany Starring each added four service aces, and freshman Arlee Tamietti added 11 kills and tied the team high with six blocks.
The Broncos continue their season next week at the WAC Volleyball Tournament. Boise State will play New Mexico State in the conference championship’s opening round, Nov. 22.
