BOISE, Idaho Led by seniors Cameron Flunder and Jackie Stroud, the Boise State University volleyball team defeated Utah State University in four games (30-15, 31-29, 29-31, 30-18), Thursday, at Bronco Gym.
A week after setting the school and Western Athletic Conference records for digs in a single match (41) against Fresno State, Stroud posted 35 digs against the Aggies, the second-highest total in school history. The libero, who is the Bronco career leader in the statistical category, moved into fourth on the WAC all-time list in career digs (1,455) with her performance.
Flunder posted a team high 19 kills against the Aggies. Her hitting percentage of .318 marks the fifth consecutive match in which the middle blocker has hit over .300. Flunder ranks third in the WAC in hitting percentage in conference matches.
With the victory the Broncos improved to 12-16 on the season and 5-10 in conference matches. The Aggies dropped to 13-17 overall and 6-9 in the WAC.
Boise State dominated the opener, hitting .308 as a team and allowing the fewest points in a single game (15) since defeating Louisiana Tech 30-14 in game two, Nov. 4. The Broncos grabbed the lead at 2-1 and never looked back. With the game well in hand at 26-15, Boise State posted a four point run, highlighted by a kill from freshman Kim Van Lith that put the Aggies away 30-14.
In game two the Aggies reclaimed the lead at 7-8 and built as much as a six point lead at 18-24. At that point Boise State put together a seven-point run to gain control of the game at 25-24. With the score tied at 29, the Broncos forced two attack errors to post a 31-29 victory in the second game and a 2-0 lead on Utah State.
In another close game, the Broncos found themselves on the other side of a 29-31 score as the Aggies forced game four. In what would be the match’s final game, Boise State took control at 8-7, and later went on a six-point run to go up by 10. Still up by 10 points at 28-18, a kill by freshman Arlee Tamietti and an attack error by Utah State gave the Broncos game four and the match.
Sophomore Mandy Klein led the Broncos in hitting percentage (.333) and with 57 assists set a career high for a four-game match. Junior Tiffany Starring added three service aces, while Tamietti (15), junior Jamie Claussen (14), and sophomore Jeanette Jenkins (12) each posted double-digit kills. For Tamietti the kill total was a career high.
The Broncos conclude their regular season against Nevada, Saturday, at 6:00 p.m., in Bronco Gym. The match is senior night, so come out to thank seniors Jackie Stroud and Cameron Flunder for four great years of Bronco volleyball!
