Nov. 12, 2015

BOISE, Idaho (11/12/2015) - Shawn Garus Boise State’s head volleyball coach announced today the signing of Cassedi Simon (West Liberty, Iowa) and Janell Walley (Yucaipa, Calif.) to National Letters of Intent. The duo will join the Broncos for the 2016 campaign.

“I really like these two, they both bring a lot to our program and have solid youth experience,” commented Garus. “Their addition gives us depth and they both have the potential to step in right away and make an impact.”

Cassedi Simon
Simon is a senior at West Liberty High School in West Liberty, Iowa, where she is a four-year starter at setter for the Comets’ varsity team. Over the last three years Simon has helped WLHS to a combined record of 90-23 including a 35-4 mark this fall as a senior. With the 2015 honors yet to be announced, Simon is a three-time all-conference and a two-time all-district honoree.

As a junior she helped WLHS to a 36-6 overall record and berth into the state tournament earning first-team all-state recognition in the process.

“Cassedi is a setter out of Iowa who impressed me a lot with what she did with her club volleyball team,” said Garus. “She is an aggressive setter and very athletic. She also likes to jump set and run a fast offense. I think she will be a great fit for what we do here at Boise State. She also plays for a really intense coach who was a former collegiate setter herself, so Cassedi is getting really good training and I expect her to be ready to play right away.”

Simon has also been named three times to the Muscatine Journal All-Area First Team and once each to the Quad City Times First and Second Teams. The three-time team captain has her team, coached by Ruben Galvan, currently competing in the post season.

The future Bronco has been a four-sport athlete during her prep career also competing in basketball, softball and track & field. Simon is an academic standout as well being named a three-time member of the LCHS Blue Honor Roll.

Simon has played her club ball for the Platform Elite Volleyball Club of Davenport, Iowa, where she has been coached by Dawn Kerr for the last three years. She has also played for the Iowa Rockets Volleyball Club of Iowa City. During her club ball career her teams have reached the USVA Junior National Tournament three times in 2011, 2014 and 2015. In 2014 the Platform Elite team finished third at the Show Me Qualifier and in 2015 they won the Northern Lights Qualifier to advance to nationals each year.

Janell Walley
Walley will come to Boise from Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, Calif., where she has been a four-year starter for the Thunderbirds varsity team. The 5-foot-11 rightside hitter has helped her team to a 26-5 record this fall and a berth into regionals.

“Janell plays for Rancho Valley Volleyball Club which plays a nationally competitive schedule and they are always one of the best teams in the country,” Garus said. “As a left handed attacker I am really excited about the versatility she brings to our offense. Janell is also a great ball control player with the ability to either set or pass the ball and she can play great defense. I just think Janell is a great all-around player who will make an immediate impact on our program.”

As a starter over the last three years, playing for coach Amber VonKaenel, Walley has helped the Thunderbirds to a combined 59-28 overall record and 29-9 league mark to finish second twice.

She entered this fall as a three-time All-Citrus Belt League First Team honoree and is waiting to hear on this season’s awards. Walley is a two-time team captain and has been named the team’s offensive most valuable player as a sophomore, and team MVP the last two years.

She is a two-sport athlete also competing on the track & field team where has twice set the school record for the high jump with the most recent being 5 feet, 7 inches. Walley is also a success in the classroom where she is a four-time member of the YHS Honor Roll.

For the last five years Walley has played her club ball for the Rancho Valley Volleyball Club in San Bernardino, Calif., for coach Danny Scott.
