Stroud Sets Another Record as Broncos Win

FRESNO, Calif. After setting a school record Thursday night against San Jose State, senior Jackie Stroud broke another Bronco mark, leading the volleyball team to a five-game victory (20-30, 29-31, 30-26, 30-24, 15-13), Saturday, in its last road match of the regular season.

Stroud set the all-time record for digs in a career against the Spartans, Thursday, and with 41 digs against the Bulldogs, the libero shattered the school’s record for digs in a single game. The previous mark was 33, set by Rebecca Richards on Oct. 4, 1986.

With the victory the Broncos improved to 11-15 on the year and 4-9 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-22 overall and 2-12 in conference action.

After a 30-20 defeat in game one, Boise State found itself down by seven in game two at 24-17. The Broncos regained the lead, however, at 27-26, and had the Bulldogs at game point (29-27) before Fresno State reeled off four consecutive points to escape with a 31-29 victory.

Down two games to none, and needing to sweep the next three games for the win, Boise State did just that. The Broncos squeaked out a 30-26 victory in game three, and posted a 30-24 victory in game four.

In the fifth and decisive game, Boise State grabbed the lead on the opening point and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the match. Fresno State was able to tie the game up for the second time at 13-13, but a kill from senior Cameron Flunder and an attack error by Fresno State’s Angela Wiggins gave Boise State a 15-13 victory.

Flunder led the Broncos with 24 kills, the most by a Bronco this season. Junior Jamie Claussen and sophomore Jeanette Jenkins posted 15 kills each, and freshman Arlee Tamietti tied a career high with 13 kills on the match.

Sophomore Robyn Hewitt led the team with a hitting percentage of .429, while Flunder, who hit .380, posted a hitting average above .300 for her third consecutive match.

Sophomore Mandy Klein added a career high 59 assists, and Flunder posted a team high six blocks.

Hawaii, Utah State and Nevada will all be in town next week as the Broncos complete their regular season at Bronco Gym.
