Broncos Suffer a 3-0 Loss at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah - The Boise State volleyball team suffered their fifth-straight loss Thursday night (Nov. 4) after they dropped a three-set match to Utah State. The Broncos fall to 17-11 (4-8 WAC) with the 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) loss to the Aggies (18-7, 6-6 WAC), while moving to 1-1 on the season. The Broncos still lead the all-time series 17-14.

Utah State relied on their net defense and attacking to win the match, posting a 22-to-14 advantage over the Broncos in blocking, as well as a 46-to-38 ratio in kills (.234 to .119). Shantell Durrant and Shay Sorensen each recorded six blocks, while Sorensen and Liz McArthur led the match with 10 and 11 kills, respectively.

Boise State's Alisha Young tallied nine kills and six blocks (one solo), while Fiona Jones added nine kills and three blocks (one solo) to lead the Broncos.

Although the match was close, Utah State led most of the way. The Aggies jumped to a quick 7-3 lead in the first set before the Broncos were able to score five straight points and go up 8-7. The Aggies fought back keeping the match close, but Boise State burst ahead to a 13-10 lead mid-way through the set. The Aggies responded by going on a six-point run before pulling away to a 25-18 first-set win.

In the second set the Aggies never lost the lead, although the score was tied up three times up to the 4-4 point. From there Aggies were able to score nine-straight points, allowing to coast for much of the set. The Broncos, however, had a late surge in set two, closing in just a little late to fall 25-22.

The third set was the closest of the three with 10 ties and four lead changes. Boise State was up 20-17 and led as late as the 20-19 mark before Utah State stepped on the gas and closed out the 25-23 set-three win.

Boise State's Jones joined Breann Nesselhuf and Amanda Remy to record the team's three service aces, the only category where the Broncos bettered the Aggies. Remy led the team with 13 digs, while Jones and Kersti Whitney added 10 each. Nesselhuf added three blocks, 27 assists and four kills, good for a team leading .400 hitting percentage in the match.

Utah State's Katie Astle recorded a match-high .800 hitting percentage after recording eight kills on 10 attempts with no errors. Chelsea Fowles recorded 36 assists, while also joining McArthur to earn the team's two aces. Christine Morrill dominated the backcourt earning 24 digs on the night to lead the match.

With the loss the Broncos remain the No. 6 team in the WAC standings while Utah State improves one spot to No. 4 in the standings.

The Broncos continue their final regular season road trip in Reno, Nev., taking on the Nevada Wolf Pack on Sat., Nov. 6 in a 2 p.m. (Mountain) match.
