Broncos Take On Utah State, Nevada on Final Regular Season Road Trip

► What's Happening - The Boise State volleyball team is winding down their season, heading on their final regular season road trip to Utah State (Logan, Utah) and Nevada (Reno, Nevada). The Broncos take on the Aggies in a 7p.m. (Mountain) match on Thurs., Nov. 4, followed by a 2 p.m. (Mountain) match against the Wolf Pack on Sat., Nov. 6.

A Look at Boise State:

The Broncos come off of a tough 0-2 week, falling to Fresno State, 3-2, last Monday in Boise and dropping a 3-0 match to No. 5 Hawaii in Honolulu last Friday.

About the Broncos: Boise State holds a 17-10 record on the season, including a 4-7 WAC record. Currently Alisha Young leads the team with 331 kills this season, as well as total points (420.0) while she ties Sadie Maughan for the lead in total blocks (111). Breann Nesselhuf leads the team in assists (1,112), while Amanda Remy leads in aces (27) and digs (349).  

In the Rankings: The Boise State volleyball team has one top-50 national rankings to boast this week with Breann Nesselhuf sitting at No. 35 in assists per set (10.80).

 Record Watch: A handful of Broncos are making their mark in the Boise State record books this season with Sadie Maughan, Alisha Young, Elizabeth Griffin, Breann Nesselhuf and Lauren Hamm all inside the school's top-10 lists. Young and Maughan sit at No. 2 (1,167.0) and No. 4 (1,145.0), respectively, on the career-points chart, while both moved onto the season points chart last week. Young now holds the No. 5 spot in points in a season (420) while Maughan sits at No. 10 (328.5). Junior Griffin joins the senior pair in the career-points top-10, sitting at No. 10 with 509.5 points (No. 9 is Mandy Klein, 549.0, 2005-08).

Maughan set a school record for hitting percentage in a match on Sept. 18 against Davidson, earning a .867 hitting percentage. Maughan and Griffin each have had top-10 hitting percentages in a match this season, tying for the No. 8 spot with .692 hitting percentages each. Maughan recorded hers against Long Island (Aug. 28) while Griffin set hers against Weber State (Sept. 8).

Maughan also sits among the top-10 in total career-blocks, sitting to No. 6 with 400. (No. 5 is held by Kelly Chapman, 404 blocks, 1983-86). Maughan tied for No. 4 in all-time assisted blocks in a match against Idaho (Sept. 29) with 10.

Breann Nesselhuf moves to No. 7 in career assists with 2,056 (No. 6 is Chera Sommer, 2,080 assists, 1999-2002), while also moving to No. 8 in the season assists list (1,112). Lauren Hamm sits at the No. 5 on the career digs list with 1,193 digs (No. 4 is Brandy Mamizuka, 1,265 digs, 1995-98).

Young is nearing the career-kills list with 972 total, chasing down the No. 10 spot held by Debbie Hansmann (1,022 career kills). She already is tied for No. 4 on the top-10 kills in a match this season, hitting 29 kills against Portland State (Sept. 4).

Amanda Remy also chases down a season chart, looking to break into the top-10 on season digs. She has 349 this season with No. 10 on the chart sitting at 361 (held by Jackie Stroud, 2005, and Debbie Hansmann, 1987).

Boise State Head Coach: Shawn Garus is in the midst of his second season at Boise State and currently holds a 140-152 record over his career, as well as a 25-32 record at Boise State.

Match 28 Preview - at Utah State:
● The Series:
Boise State and Utah State enter their 31st match-up in school history with Boise State leading 17-13 in the all-time series. Most recently the two teams faced off on Oct. 9 with the Broncos walking away with a close 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 15-7) win.   

About the Aggies: Utah State enters the week with a 17-7 record, including a 5-6 conference record this season. Most recently the Aggies earned a 3-0 win over San Jose State (Oct. 28) and a 3-2 win over Fresno State (Oct. 30) on the road.

Liz McArthur leads the team in kills (381), aces (39) and points (441.5), while Chelsea Fowles leads the team in assists (2,130) this season. Christine Morrill holds the most digs (492) for the team so far this season, while Shantell Durrant has racked up 124 blocks to lead the team.

In the Rankings: Utah State ranks in two categories as a team in the nation's top-50, as well as holding four individual rankings. As a team, USU ranks No. 10 in the nation in blocks per set (2.84) while also ranking No. 50 in aces per set (1.52). Individually, Liz McArthur ranks No. 21 in points per set (4.80), is tied for No. 23 in aces per set (0.42) and is ranked No. 27 in kills per set (4.14). Shantell Durrant ranks No. 12 in the nation in blocks per set (1.38).

Close Ties: Utah State senior Shantell Durrant and Boise State senior Alisha Young both attended American Fork High School in American Fork, Utah.

Utah State Head Coach: Grayson DuBose holds a 73-70 record in his fifth year of coaching the Aggies, including the team's 17-7 record this season.

Match 29 Preview - at Nevada:
● The Series:
Boise State and Nevada enter their 46th contest in series history with the Wolf Pack leading 26-19 all-time. Most recently, Nevada earned a 3-1 (33-31, 19-25, 19-25, 21-25) win over Boise State in Bronco Gym on Oct. 7.

About the Wolf Pack: Nevada enters the week with a 13-11 record, including a 7-4 WAC record. Most recently, Nevada earned a 3-1 win over Fresno State (Oct. 28) and a 3-2 win over San Jose State (Oct. 30) on the road.

The team is currently led by Kylie Harrington in kills (305), aces (20) and points (345.5). Tatiana Santiago leads in assists (895), while Nicole Link leads in digs (340). Lindsay Baldwin rounds out the team by leading in blocks with 83 total on the season.

Nevada Head Coach: Devin Scruggs has tallied a 225-181 record in her 14 years at Nevada. This includes the team's 13-11 record this season.

All-Tournament Team Members - Alisha Young and Sadie Maughan were named to the 2010 Falcon Invitational All-Tournament Team, while Young and Breann Nesselhuf were been named to the 2010 Northwest Challenge All-Tournament Team. In the Uni/Wyo Cowgirl Classic, Young was joined by Liz Harden and Kersti Whitney on the all-tournament team, while Young also collected MVP honors. Most recently, Maughan was named as the NFINITY Wildcat Classic MVP, while also being joined by Nesselhuf on the all-tournament team.

WAC Honors - Boise State's Sadie Maughan earned her first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor on Sept. 20 for her efforts during the Sept. 13-19 week. Maughan's honor was only the fourth-ever by a Bronco since joining the WAC.

WAC Coaches' Poll - Boise State was picked to finish fifth in the 2010 WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll in August, earning 35 points. Hawaii was picked to win its 15th-straight WAC title (64 points, 8 first place votes), New Mexico State was picked second (57 pts., one first place vote), Fresno State was picked third (44 pts.) and Utah State was picked fourth (38 pts.) to finish ahead of the Broncos. Rounding out the conference was Idaho in sixth (32 pts.), Nevada in seventh (30 pts.), Louisiana Tech in eighth (30 pts.) and San Jose State in ninth (9 pts.).
