Broncos Knocked Off By New Mexico State

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State University volleyball team dropped a three-game match (31-29, 30-21, 30-22) to No. 23 New Mexico State University, Thursday, at Bronco Gym.


The Broncos, who entered the contest ranked seventh in the Western Athletic Conference, dropped to 9-14 this season and 2-8 in the WAC. The Aggies, ranked No. 23 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, improved to 27-1 on the year and 10-1 in conference action.


In a close opening game that saw three lead changes and 12 ties, Boise State led by as many as five points at 21-16, and held the lead as late as 24-23. After the Aggies grabbed the lead at 25-24, the two teams traded each of the next 10 points until New Mexico State found itself with a 30-29 lead. The Aggies were able to escape with a 31-29 victory in game one on a kill by junior Kim Oguh.


After three early lead changes in the match’s second game, the Aggies jumped out to a six-point lead at 16-10. The Broncos were twice able to get the game to within two, but New Mexico State reeled off nine consecutive points, ultimately winning 30-21. The Aggies led the third game wire-to-wire, knocking off the Broncos 30-22.


Senior Jackie Stroud reached a career milestone, posting 13 digs to crack the WAC all-time list for career digs. Stroud now has 1,322 career digs, the 10th-most in conference history. Stroud added two service aces on the evening.


Junior Jamie Claussen led the Broncos in three statistical categories, posting a .289 hitting percentage, 13 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Mandy Klein added a team-high 26 assists and two service aces, while senior Cameron Flunder led the Broncos with five blocks.


The Broncos return to action, Saturday, against Louisiana Tech at Bronco Gym.
