Broncos Swept By Vandals, 3-0

MOSCOW, Idaho In their final regular season road trip of the season, the Boise State volleyball team struggled against the University of Idaho, falling 3-0 at Memorial Gym in Moscow. Improving to 2-0 against the Broncos this season, the Vandals were able to pick up a 25-22, 25-16, 25-7 in the Saturday night match. With the loss, the Broncos move to 6-15 on the season and 3-8 in the Western Athletic Conference while Idaho improves to 14-7 on the season and 5-3 in the WAC.

 

The University of Idaho earned dominating victories in sets two and three, but struggled in the first set to get going. The Vandals had 14 kills in set one and hit only .071 (hitting percentage), but the Broncos struggled even more with a -.083 percentage and only registering four kills. The Broncos were only able to hit six kills in set two and four kills in set three while Idaho knocked out 16 kills in set two and nine kills in set three to earn the three set sweep.

 

Overall Boise State tallied only 14 kills on the night and recorded a -.134 hitting percentage on the night. As a team the Broncos earned five team blocks, an uncharacteristic number for the No. 12 ranked team in the nation in blocks per set. Boise State also earned 38 digs and had two service aces from Mandy Klein and Jeanette Jenkins.

 

The Vandals were able to rack up 39 kills and a .181 hitting percentage while also earning 11 team blocks, 56 digs and four ace serves.

 

Leading the Broncos, sophomore Alisha King tallied a team high of six kills, but struggled with eight errors for a -.065 percentage. Sophomore Sadie Maughan also added five kills, but also struggled when tallying five errors for a .000 percentage. Lauren Hamm earned 10 digs on the night while Jeanene Rose added seven to the backcourt defense. Freshman Elizabeth Griffin had a team high of three blocks (one solo) while freshman Eliza Pledger had two block assists and Maughan had two solo blocks.

 

For the Vandals, Haley Larsen led the way, recording a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Conwell also added 12 kills on the night while also recording a match high of .417 in hitting percentage. Kelsey Yonker led the Vandal defense with 15 digs while Anna McKinney notched seven blocks (two solo) in the Vandal win.

 

The Broncos have three weeks remaining in regular season play, including six matches, which will all be played at home in Bronco Gym. Boise State will have a short weekend of preparations before they face Utah Valley on Tues., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. They will continue this week’s action on Sat., Nov. 1 in a 7 p.m. match against New Mexico State.
