Broncos Drop Close Match

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State University volleyball team dropped a five-game match to Western Athletic Conference rival Idaho (28-30, 37-35, 21-30, 30-19, 15-8), Wednesday, at Bronco gym.

 

It is the second five-game loss in three matches for the Broncos, who now sit at 8-13 overall and 2-7 in conference play. The Broncos are now 1-3 this season in matches that have gone five games. Idaho improved to 7-13 overall and 6-2 in the WAC.

 

After grabbing the lead at 3-2 in game one, Boise State didn’t relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. Leading by as many as eight points, the Broncos ultimately won the first game 30-28.

 

In a back and forth game-two battle, the Broncos jumped out to a 9-1 lead. The Vandals tied the match at 29-29 to even the game for the first time since it was zero-all. Three lead changes and six ties later, the Vandals evened the match at 1-1 with a 37-35 game two victory.

 

The Broncos roared back in game three, hitting .438 as a team to Idaho’s .195. With a 30-21 victory, Boise State regained the match lead at 2-1. The Vandals once again clawed back, evening the match with a 30-19 victory in game four. In the fifth and deciding game, Idaho knocked off the Broncos 15-8.

 

Senior Jackie Stroud set both a career high and a Bronco season high with 29 digs, the sixth most in school history for a single match. Stroud now has 1,299 digs in her career, placing her second on the Bronco all-time list, 51 behind Rebecca Richards (1984-86, 88).

 

With a hitting percentage of .343, senior Cameron Flunder posted a team high 17 kills on the match to lead the Broncos. Junior Jamie Claussen (12), freshman Arlee Tamietti (12) and sophomore Jeanette Jenkins (11) also recorded double-digit kills.

 

Sophomore Robyn Hewitt led the Broncos both in hitting percentage (.357) and blocks (six). Hewitt has now posted a hitting percentage of .300 or more and added five blocks or more for three consecutive games.

 

Sophomore Mandy Klein recorded a Bronco season high 53 assists, a mark that also ties her career high. Flunder and sophomore Andrea Kelley each had three service aces, tying the sophomore’s career high and setting the senior’s season high.

 

The Broncos return to action Sunday at Bronco Gym (12:30 p.m.), against North Dakota State University.
