Broncos Overpower Louisiana Tech in 3-1 Road Win

RUSTON, La. Boise State’s volleyball team improved to a 6-12 record on Thursday evening after earning a 3-1 victory over Louisiana Tech at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston. The Broncos fought off the Lady Techsters to win, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17 to improve to 3-5 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Lady Techsters dropped to 3-13 on the season, including a 0-7 WAC record.

 

In the first set, the Broncos were led by senior Jeanette Jenkins who tallied four of the Broncos’ 15 total kills in the set. With the help of three service aces as a team, the Broncos were able to come from behind and tie the set at 18-18 before holding off LTU to go up one set.

 

Set two nearly mirrored the first, with the Broncos fighting from behind to earn a 16-16 tie. Boise State went on a 7-0 run from there to improve to a 23-16 lead and clinched their second set on a Sadie Maughan kill. The Broncos’ Jenkins accumulated four additional kills of the team’s 14 in set two while serving up one of the three aces from the Broncos in the win.

 

Louisiana Tech came out strong after the intermission, firing off 13 kills over Boise State’s nine team kills to earn the set three win. Although the Broncos only attained nine kills, sophomore Alisha King produced six of them, adding to her match total of 14.

 

In the final set, Boise State came out with a vengeance totaling 15 kills and holding LTU to seven kills. Maughan and King added four kills and one ace each in the win. The Broncos were able to close out set four after Emily Botts assisted Lydia Blaha in a block and returned for the match sealing kill in her first action of the season.

 

Boise State was led by King with her 14 kills while also leading the team with three service aces. Jenkins added 13 kills with a solid .200 hitting percentage as well as two service aces and four block assists. Maughan joined freshman Elizabeth Griffin in producing nine kills each while Maughan hit .240 and Griffin hit .368 on the night. Senior Mandy Klein produced a season-high of 43 assists and joined Lauren Hamm in producing two service aces each. Hamm also led the team in digs with 17, while Jeanene Rose had 13 on the night. Blaha led the Broncos’ net defense with six blocks (two solo) in the four-set win.

 

Louisiana Tech was led by Taylor Fritz and KC Clayton, each producing 10 kills while Fritz added three service aces and Clayton five blocks (one solo). Setter Bianca Bin matched Fritz with three aces while adding 30 assists. Debora Bolohini led the Lady Techsters’ backcourt with 15 digs on the night.

 

As a team, Boise State totaled 53 kills and a .196 percentage while Louisiana Tech tallied 42 kills and a .128 percentage.

 

The Broncos continue their road trip in Las Cruces, N.M. on Saturday, facing New Mexico State. The Aggies look to be tough competition as they enter the weekend after knocking of top-10 ranked Hawaii in Honolulu last weekend. Their match against the Broncos is slated for 3 p.m. (Mountain Time) at the Pan American Center.
