Broncos Fight Off Spartans in 3-2 Win

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Boise State volleyball team opened up their 2010 Western Athletic Conference season on Thursday (Sept. 23) at San Jose State, squeezing out a 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9) win over the Spartans. The Broncos, who played only their second five-set match of the season on Thursday, improve to 13-2 (1-0 WAC) on the season while SJSU falls to 5-9 (0-1 WAC).

Four Broncos led the team in kills with seniors Alisha Young and Sadie Maughan, and sophomores Fiona Jones and Liz Harden each tallying 12 kills on the night. Harden earned the highest hitting percentage at .370. Young recorded the only double-double of the match while also leading the team in blocks with a career-best total of 10 (one solo), while Jones led the team in digs with 13. Sophomore Kersti Whitney tallied a match-high five service aces while Breann Nesselhuf added 46 assists on the night.

Overall the Broncos earned a .308 hitting percentage with 58 kills, ten service aces, 58 digs and 28 blocks. San Jose State tallied a .201 hitting percentage with 66 kills, 61 assists, six aces, 68 digs and 10 blocks.

SJSU was led by Alex Akana in kills with a match-high of 16, while Kylie Miraldi led the team in blocks (5). Asia Casino added a team-high of three aces, while Katie Turner racked up a match-leading 23 digs. Caitlin Andrade added 50 assists to the Spartan offense.

The Broncos take to the court again on Saturday (Sept. 25) facing Fresno State in Fresno in an 8 p.m. (Mountain) match. The Broncos return home for their first WAC match in Bronco Gym on Wed., Sept. 29, taking on Idaho at 7 p.m.
