Broncos Win Mountain West Opener at Wyoming

Broncos defeat Cowgirls in five sets.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Boise State volleyball ushered in its Mountain West membership Thursday night with an exciting five-set victory in its inaugural match at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Fiona Jones led the Broncos with 14 kills followed by three others with nine kills apiece. Boise State jumped out to a two set lead before having to battle off a Cowgirl rally that tied the match at two sets apiece. The Broncos regrouped to win the fifth 15-12 for their first Mountain West victory. With the win they improved to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in conference. Boise State now travels to eight-time league champion No. 20 Colorado State for a 1:00 p.m. match Saturday afternoon.

"I was really happy with the way the team battled when the match got tight," said coach Shawn Garus. "We let momentum slip away and allowed Wyoming back into the match. We pulled it together, fought hard in the fifth and came away with a big victory tonight." 

Wyoming opened the first set quick taking the early lead then held onto it until midway through the stanza when the Broncos rallied to tie it at 12 all and again at 14-14. Boise State took its first lead of the opening set at 16-15 and never trailed again as they won 25-20. The second set was close throughout with the teams trading seven leads before the Broncos won it 25-23 to take a two-set advantage into the intermission.

The third set went to Wyoming who led nearly the entire time eventually taking it by seven points 25-18, cutting the Bronco match advantage to one set at 2-1. Wyoming tied the match up when the Cowgirls held off a late Boise State rally to win the fourth set 25-23. However, the Broncos regrouped for the fifth set pulling away late to win 15-12 and  claim their first ever Mountain West victory 3-2.

Fiona Jones led Boise State with 14 kills while hitting .216 on the night, she also had one ace and three block assists. Breann Nesselhuf contributed nine kills, 27 assists, 14 digs and three block assists. Liz Harden and Darlene Nwagbuo added nine kills each, while Nwagbuo also recorded a team-high four block assists. Brittany Reardon and Elizabeth Griffin had eight kills each. The team hit 15.5 percent (58-33-161) overall.

Wyoming was led by  Reese Plante with 18 kills while hitting 43.3 percent. Jodi Purdy followed with 14 kills, while Erin Kirby had 11 kills and 10 block assists.
