Broncos Hold Off High Point, Win 3-1

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Boise State University volleyball team began their final regular-season tournament on Friday at the 2010 NFINITY Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson College. The Broncos (10-2) took on High Point University (3-9) in their first match of the tournament, picking up a 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 25-14) win.

After a long day of travel to Davidson, N.C., on Thursday, the Broncos struggled to get going on Friday in their first match of the Wildcat Classic. In the first set, Boise State held the advantage through the 23-point mark before HPU was able to catch up and pass the Broncos for the win. Boise State snuck out a 25-23 second-set win, not playing with their normal spunk. However, after the second to third set intermission, the Broncos gained confidence and energy, guiding them to quick 25-18 and 25-14 set three and set four wins.

Fiona Jones, who tallied 13 kills, two aces and nine digs, led the Broncos, while Elizabeth Griffin added 11 kills. Breann Nesselhuf added a team-high of 13 digs, as well as four blocks and 40 assists. In the backcourt Kersti Whitney and Amanda Remy each added 12 digs, while Alisha Young led the team defensively at the net with seven blocks.

High Point was led by Megan Smith with nine kills, while Maddie Simpson added three aces, 21 assists and four blocks. Julie Hershkowitz led the team in digs with 18.

Overall the Broncos tallied 51 kills, a .201 hitting percentage, 61 digs and 21 blocks. High Point was held to 31 kills, a .008 hitting percentage, 50 digs and 11 blocks.

The Broncos continue their journey through the tournament on Saturday with a 8 am (Mountain) match against Eastern Michigan, followed by a 5 pm (Mountain) match with host Davidson College.
