Broncos Suffer a Tough 3-1 Loss to Utah Valley

BOISE, Idaho - After two weeks of road matches, the Boise State volleyball team returned to Bronco Gym on Thursday night to host a tough Utah Valley State team. The Broncos (0-10) played a well-fought match, but were not able to hold off the Wolverines (6-5) in a 23-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-18 loss.

Boise State entered the first set with high intensity, earning a 25-23 battle to the finish win. Taking the lead at the 8-8 mark, the Broncos were able to the upper hand to the 22-22 point, leading by as much as eight (22-14). The Wolverines were able to claw their way back into the set, putting pressure on the Broncos, making up the eight points. Boise State held on to score the final two points of the set and lead 1-0 overall.

The second set was more of a back-and-forth battle with late ties beginning at 18-18. From there the two teams battled through seven more ties before UVU could come away with the 27-25 win.

In the third and fourth sets, Utah Valley came out with aggression, racking up early leads in both sets. At their best, UVU had earned eight-point leads in each set, a difference that was too much for the Broncos to make up.

The Broncos highlight of the night as a team was out-blocking the Wolverines, earning 10 team blocks as well as 18 block assists and one solo block. UVU earned eight team blocks and 16 assisted blocks on the night.

Leading the Broncos in that same category was junior Sadie Maughan, tallying five block assists. Maughan also led the team in hitting percentage with a steady .412 number with nine total kills. Freshman Liz Harden led the team in kills with 10 while sophomore Breann Nesselhuf and junior Alisha Young added nine more kills apiece. Setter Breann Nesselhuf tallied 21 assists and nine digs, while freshman setter Kirsten Duren made her mark in the match with 14 assists and eight digs. Each of the setters added one service ace apiece out of the seven total aces by the Broncos.

Junior libero Lauren Hamm racked up a team-high of 13 digs as well as adding a team-leading two service aces. Senior Jeanene Rose matched Hamm's mark, adding two aces herself.

For the Wolverines, Kayli Broadbent led the team in kills, racking up 16 total as well as a good .294 hitting percentage. Chelsey Garfield added 12 kills to the offensive efforts while Faith Tusieseina contributed a .857 hitting percentage with six total kills. Allyce Jones earned a team-high of 19 digs while also tying Kathleen Stevens for a team-leading mark of two service aces. Setter Chelsea Fa'alogo added 43 assists to the offense while Dani Robinson led the team defensively at the net with five assisted blocks.

Overall the Broncos earned 42 kills and a .140 hitting percentage as well as 52 digs while Utah Valley tallied up 56 kills and a .228 percentage as well as 64 digs.

The Broncos have a week off from competition, resting over the weekend to prepare for No. 4 -ranked Hawaii on Thursday, Sept. 24. The match between the Rainbow Wahine and the Broncos will be played the first Western Athletic Conference match of the season for Boise State and is slated to begin at 11 p.m. (Mountain Time) in Honolulu.
