SAN JOSE, Calif. After picking up their first two wins of the season last weekend, the Boise State volleyball team extended their streak to three matches on Thursday night when they defeated San Jose State University, 3-0. The Broncos (3-7, 1-0), who opened up their 2008 Western Athletic Conference schedule against the Spartans (4-7, 0-1), got off on the right foot breaking a six-match SJSU winning streak dating back to 2005.

The Broncos, who were No. 7 in the WAC weekly standings, improved their record against the Spartans (No. 5 in the weekly standings) to 3-14 at Spartan Gym. The 3-0 sweep of the Spartans was a big turnaround from the two teams’ most recent match which finished in a 3-2 San Jose State win in October 2007.

On Thursday, the Broncos were carried by an excellent offense, hitting a percentage of .319 (41 kills) as a team while freshman Lydia Blaha and senior Maren Ericson hit an exact match of seven kills each (.462). The third set was a bit more of a thriller with Boise State looking to earn a comfortable win with a 20-10 lead. However, the Spartans rallied and went on a 10-4 run to bring the third set score to a 24-20 Bronco lead before Boise State was able to close out the match. Boise State hit another consistent .233 with 10 kills in the third and final set, while San Jose State struggled, notching 12 kills and 12 errors for a .000 percentage. The Spartans tallied 38 kills and a .144 percentage on the night.

Leading the Broncos in kills was sophomore Alisha King who tallied 11 kills (.364) as well as a tie for team-high with two service aces and adding two block assists. Freshman Elizabeth Griffin hit nine kills on the night while sophomore Sadie Maughan had an outstanding match recording a .429 hitting percentage and tallying 7 kills.
