Broncos set new school record for hitting percentage at .585.
NORMAN, Okla. - The Broncos opened the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational in a big way Friday morning setting the school record for match hitting percentage at 58.5 percent as Boise State University rolled past the Texas Southern University Lady Tigers in three sets (25-8, 25-15, 25-4). Leading the way for the blue and orange was redshirt-freshman Brittany Reardon who recorded the second-best match hitting percentage in program history at 84.6 percent (11-0-13). This match was the first of two today for Boise State who improved to 6-3 on the year with the win. The Broncos will play the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain) this afternoon at McCasland Fieldhouse in Norman, Okla.
"I was happy with the way the team played, it was a good way for us to start the tournament out," said head coach Shawn Garus. "We hit the ball extremely well and capitalized on what they gave us. We were able to get some of our young players into the match for quality experience. I was real happy with the way Brittany (Reardon) and Taylor (Murphey) played in the match."
Boise State stormed out of gates with a solid set one hitting an impressive 70 (15-1-20) percent to take the early match lead with a 25-8 victory. Reardon gave the Broncos the early boost to gain momentum in the match recording six kills on six attempts in the first set, while Casey Rose added a stellar performance from the service line with a career-high tying three aces. The second set was harder for Boise State even though the Broncos ran out to a sizeable 16-7 lead midway through before eventually winning it by 10 at 25-15.
With as impressive as the first set was for the Broncos, the third was dominating as Boise State put the match away with a crushing 25-4 victory while hitting a season-high 77.8 percent (15-1-18). It was an overall team effort as four Broncos, Breann Nesselhuf (3-0-4), Reardon (3-0-3), Elizabeth Griffin (3-0-3) and Liz Harden (3-0-3) recorded three kills in the set, all without a hitting error.
Reardon's .846 hitting percentage goes into the record book as the second-best three-set and overall match all-time. She also added three block assists during the match to increasing her team-high season total to 26.
Nesselhuf followed Reardon's team-high 12.5 points with nine of her own on six kills (.364), two aces and two block assists to go with 19 assists and four digs. Harden added 8.5 points on eight kills (.800) and one block assist, followed by freshman Taylor Murphey's career-outing with 7.5 points on six kills (.364), one ace and one block assist. Darlene Nwagbuo was close behind with seven points on five kills (.429), one block solo and two block assists. Casey Rose matched Nesselhuf's assists total with 19 to go with a team-high three aces.
Texas Southern was led by Mona Reed with 6.5 points on five kills (.048), one service ace and one block assist. Precious Spenser and Erica Lewis followed with three points each.
The three-set victory was the third of the year by Boise State who entered the match coming off a 3-0 win at Weber State on Tuesday. The Broncos enter this afternoon's match with UAPB on a two-match win streak and winners of six-consecutive sets. The tournament continues Saturday with two more matches on the schedule versus the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and their host No. 22 University of Oklahoma.
