Boise State Volleyball Rolls to 3-1 Win Over Central Michigan

MADISON, Wisc. The Boise State volleyball team (2-7) earned their second win of the season in day two of the InnTowner Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The Broncos faced Central Michigan University (6-4) earning a 3-1 win as well as a 2-1 finish in the tournament.


The Broncos started off slow, allowing CMU to go one up with a 25-18 first set win over Boise State. The Broncos hit a respectable .286, tallying 11 kills in the first set, but it was no match for the Chippewas’ 18 kills and .389 hitting percentage. Winning set two 25-16 Boise State bounced back quickly, hitting an outstanding .409 in the second set, again tallying 11 kills while holding CMU to a .000 percentage with 11 kills and 11 errors. The third set, which was the tightest of the four, finished in a 25-22 Boise State win with both teams struggling offensively. Boise State was only able to hit .057 (10 kills) but CMU only reached a .026 percentage (10 kills). With a 2-1 lead, the Broncos were able to play more comfortably in set four, easily downing the Chippewas 25-11. In the final set Boise State rebounded to a .217 percentage with 10 kills while CMU struggled, registering five kills and a negative .19 percentage.


The Broncos were led by senior Maren Ericson who totaled 10 kills and a solid .400 percentage while also adding eight digs and two service aces to the Broncos’ win. Freshman Elizabeth Griffin and sophomore Sadie Maughan each tallied nine kills, hitting .333 and .238, respectively. Joining Ericson with a team high of two service aces, sophomore Alisha King added a team high of seven blocks (one solo) as well as eight kills. Maughan and freshman Lydia Blaha each totaled five blocks with Blaha registering one solo block as well. Joining the defensive efforts for Boise State, sophomore Lauren Hamm recorded a match high of 14 digs while Jeanene Rose added 13. Senior Mandy Klein recorded 37 assists, running the Bronco offense.


Central Michigan was led by Whitney Evers who tallied a match high of 14 kills while also adding three blocks (two solo). Kaitlyn Schultz added five blocks (one solo) while Stephanie Budde tallied 33 assists on the night. Alexis Lonneman registered 12 digs and joined Budde and Kate Fissel in a team high of two service aces each.


As a team the Broncos had 42 kills and a .222 hitting percentage while also dominating the net defensively, recording 14.5 team blocks. CMU was able to hit 44 kills for only a .071 percentage and recorded eight team blocks in the four set match.


The Broncos will continue play next week when they travel to San Jose State for a Thursday, Sept. 18 match and to Hawaii for a Saturday, Sept. 20 match.


An all-tournament team for the InnTowner Invitational will be released at the end of the tournament.
