Broncos Sweep Undefeated Wyoming 3-0

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Boise State volleyball team finished their five-match week with a perfect record, sealing the outstanding week with a thrilling 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-23) win over previously undefeated University of Wyoming. The Broncos (9-2) upended the Cowgirls (11-1), handing them their first loss of the season in the final match of the Uni/Wyo Cowgirl Classic tournament.

After going 3-0 at the Cowgirl Classic, the Broncos landed three players on the all-tournament team. Senior Alisha Young was named "Most Valuable Player" while sophomores Liz Harden and Kersti Whitney were also named to the team. The last time Boise State started out 9-2 was in 2004 under head coach Scott Sandel.

Although the Broncos were able to win in three sets, they had to battle hard for every point, pushing neck-and-neck against Wyoming in sets one and two. In the third set, the Broncos jumped as far ahead as nine points; however the Cowgirls wouldn't bow out easily, fighting to a 21-21 tie. Wyoming held the lead through the 23-22 point mark before Boise State was able to capitalize on Cowgirl errors and earn three straight points to seal the win.

Senior middle blocker Sadie Maughan was a key player in the win, dishing out a match-high 15 kills (.433) and adding a match-high of five blocks. Young was a solid support in the middle adding 10 kills (.368), three blocks and a service ace. Junior Breann Nesselhuf added a second ace, along with her 35 assists and eight digs. Junior Amanda Remy added the team's final service ace, while fellow backcourt player Whitney and outside hitter Fiona Jones led the team in digs (10).

Wyoming was able to record three more service aces and one kill more than the Broncos, but Boise State proved to be more accurate earning the advantage in hitting percentage (.202-.109).

The Cowgirls were led by Jodi Purdy with 10 kills and three aces, while Barbara Lasic connected on 20 assists. Leading the defense for Wyoming was Jadranka Tramoslijanin with 13 digs, while Reese Roehrkasse and JennaRae Jester led at the net with four blocks each.

Boise State now preps for their final regular-season tournament, the Mizzuno Wildcat Classic, hosted by Davidson College. The tournament will be held Friday and Saturday (Sept. 17-18) in Davidson, N.C. The Broncos will take on High Point on Friday at 2:30 pm (Mountain), Eastern Michigan on Saturday at 8 am (Mountain) and tournament host Davidson at 5 pm (Mountain).
