Broncos Unable to Hold Off No. 20 UC Irvine, Drop First Match of Crowne Plaza LAX Invitational 3-0

LOS ANGELES - The Boise State volleyball team faced their second nationally ranked team in a week on Friday afternoon when they took on No. 20-ranked University of California Irvine in their first match of the Crowne Plaza LAX Invitational hosted by Loyola Marymount. The Broncos (0-7) were unable to hold off the Anteaters (7-1) falling in three sets, 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 at the Gersten Pavilion.

The Broncos struggled in their first and third sets hitting -.077 in each set, however their second set was a bit stronger with a .152 hitting percentage and nine kills. The Broncos earned 18 kills and a .012 hitting percentage on the night.

UC Irvine was solid throughout, notching 35 kills and a .279 hitting percentage on the night. The team also combined for nine service aces which gave the Anteaters a great advantage.

For the Broncos, sophomore Elizabeth Griffin was the kills leader for the night hitting a team-leading .273 percentage as well as tying junior Alisha Young for a team-leading four kills each. Junior Lauren Hamm was a big help to the Broncos on Friday night adding a team-leading two aces and 12 digs. Sophomore Breanne Nesselhuf had 11 assists and three blocks while junior Sadie Maughan had a team-high of four blocks.

Larissa Nordyke led the Anteaters with a match-high of 13 kills and a solid .423 hitting percentage. Teammate Taylor Smith outdid Nordyke in the hitting percentage column, earning a .529 percentage on 10 kills. Kristin Winkler earned match-highs in two categories racking up 19 digs and three service aces while Juliane Piqqott added 10 digs. Taryn Robertson ran the UCI offense with 26 assists.

The Broncos continue their trek at the Crown Plaza LAX Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12 when they take on host Loyola Marymount and the University of Houston. The match against LMU has been moved up one hour and will be played at 1:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) at the Gersten Pavilion. Their final match of the tournament will be against UH at 6:00 p.m. (MT) on Saturday.
