LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Boise State University volleyball team had an outstanding opening match at the Uni/Wyo Cowgirl Classic tournament hosted by the University of Wyoming. The Broncos (7-2) earned a quick 1-hour, 8-minute win over the University of Portland (4-4) Friday (Sept. 10) night, sweeping the Pilots, 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-9).
The Broncos were bolstered by their 13 total team service aces, including eight in the second set alone. Sophomore Kersti Whitney led the way with a career-high five aces, while seniors Lauren Hamm and Alisha Young and junior Amanda Remy each added two aces apiece. Breann Nesselhuf and Fiona Jones each added an ace as well.
As a team, Boise State was very successful in shutting Portland down earning a 27-6 advantage in blocks, a .305 to -0.066 advantage in hitting percentage, and a 36-20 advantage in kills.
Leading the Broncos in kills was sophomore Liz Harden who had a solid night with her season-best effort of nine kills (.421). Sadie Maughan led the defense at the net with seven blocks, while Harden added six in the win. Nesselhuf racked up 27 assists and five digs, while Whitney and Remy led the team in the backrow with seven digs each.
The Pilots were held to one service ace as a team, while Ariel Usher led the team with seven kills (-.124). Kati Hronek added six kills and a team-high two blocks. Usher was joined by Madison Smith to lead the team with four digs, while Smith also led in assists (14).
The Broncos are now 1-0 in the Uni/Wyo Cowgirl Classic, prepping to face University of Texas - Arlington and Wyoming on Saturday (Sept. 11). Boise State will take on UTA in an 11 am (Mountain) match, while facing host Wyoming in a 7 pm match.
