Boise State Volleyball Heads to Wisconsin Inntowner Invitational

BOISE, Idaho With two tournaments under their belts the Boise State volleyball team heads into their final tournament of the 2008 regular season this coming weekend. The Broncos (0-6) will travel to Madison, Wisc., to participate in the Inntowner Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Field House.

 

Although No. 14-ranked Wisconsin (5-1) in hosting the tournament, the Broncos will not get a chance to face the Badgers. The Broncos will take on No. 23-ranked Brigham Young University (5-1), Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (5-2) and Central Michigan University (5-1) in the two-day, five team tournament.

About the Boise State Broncos...

After a 0-3 showing at the Washington Northwest Challenge, the Broncos look to pick up their first win of the season at the Inntowner Invite. The Broncos will look to sophomore Alisha King to be a leader on the court. King has tallied 53 kills, seven service aces, 43 digs and 17 block assists in the Broncos’ six matches this season. Senior Mandy Klein will look to play an important role as well, she has notched 162 set assists, 40 digs, six service aces and 13 blocks (two solo) on the season. Sadie Maughan has added 39 kills and a team high .271 hitting percentage while Lydia Blaha leads the Broncos in blocks with 29 (five solo) on the season. Lauren Hamm leads the Bronco defense with 73 digs.

 

Although 0-6, the Broncos lead the Western Athletic Conference in blocks with a 2.69 per set average. As a team they also hold the No. 5 spot in service aces (1.00 per set average) and sit at No. 6 in digs (12.81 per set) in the WAC. Individually, five Broncos hold spots in the WAC standings. Freshman Lydia Blaha holds the No. 1 spot in the WAC in blocks with a 1.38 per set average. Lauren Hamm sits at No. 6 in digs (3.48 per set) while Alisha King is No. 6 in service aces (0.33 per set). Mandy Klein ranks just behind; sharing the No. 7 spot in service aces (0.30 per set) while also ranking No. 7 in assists (8.10 per set). Finally, Sadie Maughan holds the No. 10 spot in hitting percentage with a stat of .271.

 

About the Brigham Young Cougars...

The No. 23-ranked Cougars bring a 5-1 record to the table, including a 3-0 home record and a 2-0 neutral record. Most recently the Cougars went 2-1 at the Texas A&M Invitational. There they defeated Siena, 3-1, and American, 3-1, before falling 3-1 to Texas A&M.

 

BYU is led in kills by Bryn Porter (outside hitter), a returning senior starter, who has tallied 85 kills on the season. Kayla Walker (OH, Jr.) and Mal Marquardt (right side, Fr.) have added 68 and 60 kills, respectively. Setter Kiana Rogers (So.) has tallied 238 assists while also recording the second highest number of digs, 78.  Morgan Lloyd (libero, Jr.) leads the Cougar defense with 93 digs while also adding a team high of 10 service aces this season. Ashton Hosford (middle blocker, Jr.) leads the team in blocking with 41 blocks (two solo) this season.

 

The Broncos and Cougars have faced each other five times in the all-time series with BYU winning all five matches. Their most recent match was in 1991.

 

About the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Jaguars...

The Jaguars enter the weekend with a 5-2 record (Home: 2-1, Away: 1-0, Neutral: 2-1) and a 3-1 record in their most recent week of competition. The Jaguars most recently played in the Tiger Invitational hosted by the University of Memphis. There they opened up against Troy, falling 3-1. The Jaguars bounced back, winning 3-2 over Memphis, 3-0 over Iona and 3-0 over Indiana State.

 

IUPUI is led by Lauran Thompson (OH, So.) who has tallied 92 kills and 10 service aces on the season. Freshman Shari Bernhardt (OH/DS) has added 66 kills while adding 94 digs. Danielle Goodnight (S/RS, Jr.) has added 306 assists to the Jaguar offense while Chelsea Bastin (L/DS, Sr.) leads the Jaguar backcourt with 114 digs. Junior Monica Suding (MB) leads the team in blocks with 13. As a team the Jaguars have hit .176 on the season tallying 374 kills. 

 

Friday’s match will be the first ever meeting between IUPUI and Boise State.

 

About the Central Michigan Chippewas...

The Chippewas enter the weekend with a 5-1 record, including a 1-0 away record and a 4-1 neutral record. In their past week of play, CMU went 3-0, defeating South Alabama, 3-1, Alabama A&M, 3-0, and Chattanooga, 3-0.

 

As a team, the Chippewas have tallied a .273 hitting percentage with 287 kills. They are led by seniors Whitney Evers (MB) and Kate Fissel (OH) who each have notched 71 kills during the season. Evers leads the team in hitting percentage with .465 on the season. Setter Catherine Ludwig (Fr.) has run the offense with 87 assists while Kaitlyn Schultz (MB, Fr.) has notched a team high of 14 blocks (three solo). Alexis Lonneman (L, Jr.) holds the team high in digs with 95 while Kaitlyn Hurt (MB, Jr.) has the team high with nine service aces.

 

Saturday’s match will be the first ever meeting between Central Michigan and Boise State.
