Broncos Fall in Three to No. 8 Washington

 

SPOKANE, Wash. - Boise State University's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) to No. 8 University of Washington Saturday afternoon in their final match of the Northwest Challenge in Spokane, Wash.  After a close 25-21 set one, the Huskies put the match away with two quick wins in the next two sets to claim the match victory. Fiona Jones led the Bronco with 10 points followed by Elizabeth Griffin with nine.

The Broncos won their first two matches of the tournament but knew they would have their hands full with the Huskies in the final. Boise State played well in the first set battling Washington to a 25-21 score. The next set saw the Huskies roll out to an eight point, 25-17, win as Boise State struggled to get their attacks down hitting .048 percent. The third set saw the Broncos hit a match-best .259 percent but Washington countered with .400 percent hitting as they won by 10, 25-15, to closeout the match.

Fiona Jones led Boise State with a team-high 10 points on eight kills (.154) and two solo blocks, while Elizabeth Griffin followed with nine points and a team-high nine kills (.389). Breann Nesselhuf contributed 5.5 points, five kills (.167), team-high 18 assists, seven digs and one block assist.  Amanda Remy added a team-best 14 digs.

Krista Vansant led Washington with 16.5 points on 16 kills (.577) and one block assist. Bianca Rowland followed with 12 points on eight kills (.533) and team-high eight block assists.

Boise State finished the match with 33 kills on 98 attempts for a .153 attack percentage to go with 32 assists, two service aces, 40 digs and five blocks. Washington recorded 45 kills on 102 attempts (.343), 42 assists, five aces, 39 digs and 14 blocks.

The Broncos went 2-2 this week including a 2-1 mark at the Northwest Challenge to improve to 4-3 on the year. No. 8 Washington remains undefeated following three 3-0 wins at the tournament to stay undefeated at 6-0. Boise State will take next week off before continuing its 14-match road swing to open the season when they travel to Ogden, Utah, for an encounter at Weber State University on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
