SPOKANE, Wash. - Boise State University's volleyball team opened the Northwest Challenge with a 3-1 victory over Gonzaga University Friday night in Spokane, Wash. The Broncos defeated the tournament host Gonzaga Bulldogs out of the West Coast Conference with victories in the first, second and fourth sets (25-23, 26-24, 16-25, 25-23) to notch their third win of the season and improve to 3-2 overall. 

Boise State battled hard all night opening the match with 25-23 and 26-24 victories in the first two sets respectively to claim the early lead. However, the Bulldogs did not go quietly as they rallied to win the third set 25-16 before Boise State put the match away with a tight 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Neither team hit the ball particularly well with Boise State recording 52 kills on 171 attempts for a .164 team hitting percentage compared to Gonzaga's 49 kills on 154 attempts for a .149 attack percentage.  The Broncos added 49 assists, three service aces, 68 digs and eight blocks to their team total, while Gonzaga had 46 assists, six service aces, 68 digs and 13 blocks.

A trio led the Broncos with Elizabeth Griffin recording a team-high 15 kills (.244) for 15 points, followed by Fiona Jones with 14 kills (.154), one assist, 12 digs and one block assist for 14.5 points. Liz Harden added 13 kills (.250), three digs and two block assists for 14 points.

Breann Nesselhuf recorded 40 assists from the setter's position to go with three kills (.000), 13 digs, three block assists and 4.5 points. Meanwhile, senior libero Amanda Remy led the team defensively with a high of 21 digs.

Laura Day led Gonzaga with 13 kills (.114), 12 digs, four block assists and 15 points. Kylie Edinger followed Day with 10 kills (.208), five block assists and 12.5 points.

The win improves the Broncos to 3-2 on the year with two matches on the schedule for tomorrow at the Northwest Challenge when they play defending Big Sky Conference champion Portland State University (4-2) at 11 a.m. (Mountain) and No. 8 ranked University of Washington (4-0) at 5 p.m., both teams played in last year's NCAA Tournament with Washington advancing to the Elite Eight.
