Broncos Complete Falcon Invitational with 2-1 Record

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Boise State volleyball team kicked-off their 2010 season with a very successful opening tournament, going 2-1 at the Falcon Invitational. The Broncos rounded out their tournament showing with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18) win over tournament host Air Force on Saturday night. The Broncos also picked up a win earlier Saturday morning over Long Island and suffered an opening match loss to South Dakota State Friday night in the two-day, four-team tournament. Boise State seniors Alisha Young and Sadie Maughan were two of six players named to the all-tournament team.

Young's 21 Kills Leads Broncos Past Air Force...

Senior Alisha Young led the Broncos for the third-straight match on Saturday night in a 3-1 win over Air Force. Young tallied a career-best total of 21 kills in the four-set match against the Falcons, while also improving her career-best hitting percentage to .588 (21 kills-1 error-34 attempts). Young also led the Broncos with four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).

Fellow senior Sadie Maughan also had a successful evening, adding 13 kills (.308) to the Broncos' mix. Junior setter Breann Nesselhuf not only put up 46 set assists, but also led the team in digs (13) and added one service ace in the win. Lauren Hamm was right behind in the backcourt, picking up 11 digs on the night, while sophomore Liz Harden stayed steady through the weekend, adding seven more kills in Saturday's match against Air Force.

Air Force was led by Caroline Kurtz who had 19 kills, while Annalyse Schmitt added ten. Kelly Spencer had 19 digs to lead the match, while Maiya Perich added ten in the backcourt. Nichole Stilwell led the Falcon's defense at the net with her four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).

The Bronco's offense kept Air Force at bay with Boise State tallying 55 kills and a .241 hitting percentage. The Falcons had a close 51 kills, but only had a .144 hitting percentage.

Boise State's win on Saturday moved them to a 2-0 record all-time against Air Force, while they also earned a 1-0 record against Long Island and a 0-1 series record against South Dakota State after first-time meetings in the tournament.

Broncos Capture First Sweep of the Season over Long Island...

Boise State's volleyball team captured their first win of the season Saturday morning with a 3-0 (25-17. 25-14, 25-17) win over Long Island University on the second day of the 2010 Falcon Invitational hosted by Air Force. The Broncos improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Blackbirds fell to 0-2.

For the second-straight match senior, middle blocker Alisha Young tallied a double digit kill total to lead the team. Young tallied 10 kills (.222) in the three-set match while also adding two of the Broncos' eight service aces. Also playing well was sophomore Fiona Jones and senior Sadie Maughan who each had nine kills in the match. Maughan was a force in the middle tallying no errors on her 13 attempts, good for a match-leading hitting percentage of .692, topping her career-best of .538 (7-0-13) set in 2008. Maughan also went on to lead the team with five blocks (1 solo, 4 assists), while sophomore Liz Harden matched with five blocks (all assists).

Junior Elizabeth Griffin also had a successful match, earning seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Junior libero Amanda Remy led the team in the backcourt with 13 digs while adding a match-high of three service aces. Senior Lauren Hamm and sophomore Kersti Whitney added 12 and 11 digs, as well as, one and two aces, respectively.

Long Island, who was 21-14 in 2009, fell to 0-2 on the season, but were led by match-leader Hanna Gibeau in kills (11). She also led LIU in aces (1), while Ashley Rice led in blocks (4). Zuzana Buchlova was the team's strength in the backcourt with a team-high of 10 digs.

The Broncos had a 47-23 advantage over LIU in kills, out-blocked the Blackbirds 12-8, were ahead 53-32 in digs and had eight service aces to LIU's one. Overall Boise State hit a .299 attack percentage while Long Island was held to .095.

Boise State improves to a 2-1 record after their first weekend of play and prepare to host the 2010 Northwest Challenge on Fri. and Sat., Sept. 3-4. The challenge includes Boise State, top-ranked Washington, Portland State and Gonzaga and will be held at Boise State's Bronco Gym.
