Broncos Fall to Pacific in Opener

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Boise State volleyball team opened their 2011 season on Friday afternoon playing their first match of three in Southern Utah's Crystal Inn Thunderbird Invitational. The Broncos (0-1) took on Pacific (1-0) in their first match, falling 3-2.

Pacific jumped out to an early lead, winning the first two sets 25-22, 25-23 before Boise State responded with two straight sets of 25-23, 25-21. Although they had a strong comeback the Broncos could not fight off the Tigers final set of 15-10, falling in their first match of the season.

The Broncos were led by senior Darlene Nwagbuo who tallied 18.5 points in the match. Nwagbuo made a statement in her first match totaling 14 kills (.387), three solo blocks and three block assists. Senior Elizabeth Griffin racked up a team high 16 kills (.102), while Fiona Jones and Brittany Reardon added 13 (.091) and 12 (.611), respectively.

Senior Breann Nesselhuf ran the offense with her 54 set assists, adding 14 digs, two block assists and four kills on the day. In the backcourt, Amanda Remy led the way with 34 digs, while Jones added 18.

The Broncos will have a short afternoon rest before taking on host Southern Utah on their home court at 7 p.m. tonight (Aug. 26). It will be the second match of the season for both teams after SUU takes on Drake at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
