Boise State Volleyball Opens Season with Bronco Invitational
BOISE, Idaho Boise State volleyball will kick off the 2008 season by hosting the Boise State Bronco Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug. 30 at Bronco Gym. The six-match, round-robin style tournament will include Cal State University-Northridge, Seattle University and Washington State University.

The Broncos, who went 6-23 during the 2007 season, will play one match Friday and two matches on Saturday. Their first match will begin Friday at 7 p.m. against Seattle University, who went 10-16 during the 2007 season. On Saturday, the Broncos face Cal State Northridge (13-18 in 2007) at 11 a.m. and follow with a 7 p.m. match against Washington State (10-22 in 2007).

About the Broncos...
Head coach Robin Davis and his staff welcome back nine returnees from 2007, including seniors Jeanette Jenkins (Outside Hitter, 5-10), Mandy Klein (Setter, 5-10) and Maren Ericson (OH, 5-10). The Broncos also welcome six freshmen to the 2008 roster, giving good depth to the team.

Davis enters his third season with a 19-40 record over the past two seasons.

After a 6-23 season (2-14 in WAC) in 2007, the Broncos look to bounce back in 2008 with a solid mix of athletes on the roster. Juniors Jeanene Rose (Libero, 5-8) and Kati Lewis (Defensive Specialist, 5-8) will add depth to the backcourt while sophomores Lauren Hamm (L, 5-9), Sadie Maughan (Middle Blocker, 6-4), Emily Botts (DS, 5-11) and Alisha King (Right Side, 6-2) add a well-rounded depth to the squad. Freshmen Elizabeth Griffin (OH, 6-0), Kaycee Gow (MB, 6-0), Eliza Pledger (MB, 6-3), Lydia Blaha (MB, 6-0), Amanda Remy (L, 5-9) and Alexandra Diemer (S, 5-8) will add strength to the Bronco’s net play as well depth and athletic ability to the team.

The Bronco Invite will include three of Boise State’s 13 home matches this season, adding to the eight Western Athletic Conference matches and two non-conference matches (Idaho State and Utah Valley) hosted by the Broncos.

About the Redhawks...
Seattle University enters the tournament with a 10-16 record in 2007 (7-11 in GNAC) under their belts. They return four starters, Libby Graff (OH, 6-2, Jr.), Emily Powell (MB, 6-0, Jr.), Shelly Anderson (DS, 5-7, So.) and Jamie Mellies (S, 6-0, So.) as well as libero Emily Deleissegues (5-7, So.). Head coach Shannon Ellis enters her fifth season with a 59-49 record.

The Broncos have faced Seattle University only once before, winning the Oct. 13, 1978 match, 2-0.

About the Matadors...
Cal State Northridge enters the Bronco Invitational after posting a 13-18 (7-9 in Big West) record in 2007. They return five starters: Brittany Williams (OH, 5-11, So.), Angela Hupp (S/OH, 6-1, Jr.), Val Kepler (MB, 6-2, Sr.), Lynda Morales (MB, 6-2, So.) and Kayla Wright (S, 5-6, Sr.) as well as libero Amy Hultner (DS/L, 5-7, Sr.). Another key returner includes Siara Grayson (OH, 5-11, So.) while the team also welcomes four top newcomers: Sam Orlandini (S, 5-9, Fr.), Monica McFarland (DS/OH, 5-7, Fr.), Tela Burnett (MB, 6-0, Jr.), and Puneet Pataria (MB/OH, 6-1, Fr.). Head coach Jeff Stork enters his seventh season with the Matadors and has posted a 77-93 record while at CSUN.

The Matadors lead the all-time series with the Broncos with a 1-2 record, winning the two most recent matches. CSUN earned their most recent win over Boise State on Sept. 6, 2002 with a 3-0 win while also posting a 3-0 win in 2001 over the Broncos. Boise State’s single win against CSUN came in 1991 with a 3-0 sweep.

About the Cougars...
Washington
State
enters the tournament with a 10-22 (1-17 in Pac-10) record from 2007. They welcome back three returning starters: Brittany Johnson (OH, 5-9, Sr.), Kelly Hyder (DS/L, 5-9, Jr.) and Cassie Robins (MB, 6-3, Jr.). They also welcome a handful of newcomers, including: Megan Ganzer (OH, 6-3, Fr.), Breann Nesselhuf (S, 5-9, Fr.), Emily Rooney (MB, 6-1, Sr.) and Kimika Rozier (OH, 5-10, RS-Fr.). The Cougars’ head coach Andrew Palileo enters his first season with the squad but holds a 239-141 record over his 11 years of coaching.

Washington State leads Boise State in the all-time series, 10-3, including a six-match winning streak. Their most recent win came in a 3-0 win over the Broncos on Sept. 2, 2006.
