July 31, 2017

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Boise State indoor and beach volleyball teams has received the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 school year.

The indoor team's combined accumulative GPA was 3.31 with 12 of the Broncos recording a 3.0 or better GPA. Meanwhile, the beach team turned in a 3.340 combined GPA, with 13 of the members maintaining a 3.0 or better mark.

"I am proud of our teams and the way they handle their classroom responsibilities," said head coach Shawn Garus. "It is apart of our team philosophies to be the strongest we came be in the classroom and on the court. Academic success is a top priority for us and it is fantastic to see 13 of our student-athletes take care of business and maintain a 3.0 GPA or better."

The indoor Broncos were one of 145 NCAA Division I programs and one of seven Mountain West teams to earn the AVCA's Academic Team Award. The beach Broncos were one of 19 teams nationally and one of two Mountain West squads to receive the recognition from the AVCA.

Earlier this year seven Broncos were named Academic All-Mountain West honorees: Laney Hayes, Sierra Nobley, Maddy O'Donnell, Maddi Osburn, Sabryn Roberts, Emily Sullivan, and Janell Walley. Nobley, Sullivan and Walley were also named Mountain West Scholar Athletes for maintaining a 3.5 accumulative GPA or better.

The AVCA's award honors collegiate volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
