Osburn, Walley Help MW Take Second
July 14, 2017

PULA, Croatia - Boise State volleyball’s Maddi Osburn and Janell Walley helped the Mountain West All-Stars to a second-place finish at the 13th annual European Global Challenge on Friday at Pula, Croatia.

The MW All-Stars advanced to today’s final against the USA Collegiate National Team falling in three sets 25-15, 25-15, 25-13. After placing third in the three previous trips to the EGC the MW All-Stars’ second-place finish this year is the best result to date for the conference at this competition.

Osburn and Wally were among 12 student-athletes representing nine of the Mountain West member schools. The Boise State tandem are the six and seventh Broncos all-time – all in the last five years – to compete in the European Global Challenge.

Walley started every match at outside hitter recording a combined 49 points on 28 kills, eight service aces and five blocks.

Unfortunately, the tournament officials did not track digs so there are no defensive stats to report for Osburn who was the only libero that played for the MW throughout the six match competition. However, Osburn was named to the EGC All-Tournament Team for her play over the week.

The MW All-Stars opened the European Global Challenge going undefeated in group play at 3-0 with wins over Falconara (Italy) 25-18, 25-19, 25-15, Nova KBM Branik (Slovenia) 20-25, 25-23, 25-20 and BIP Southeast (USA) 25-18, 25-16, 21-25.

The MW then defeated the Slovenia U23 National Team 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 Thursday morning in the quarterfinals. Walley recorded a team-high 13 points on nine kills, three service aces and one block in the victory.

The All-Stars faced Nova KBM Branik from Slovenia for a second time at the tournament on Thursday in a semifinal encounter. The MW All-Stars dispatched NKBM by sweeping the Slovenian side in a tightly contested three sets 25-17, 26-24, 25-23 to advance for the first time into the tournament’s championship match. Walley finished with 10 points in the semi recording six kills, three service aces and one block.

On Friday the MW All-Stars took on the favored USA Collegiate National Team and fell in three sets 25-15, 25-15, 25-13. Walley tied for the team-high in kills with five to go with one service to give her a total of six points, second on the team, in the match.
