Nobley and Garus Head to Croatia
July 11, 2016

For the fourth consecutive year Boise State volleyball has sent representatives to compete in the European Global Challenge which starts today, Monday, July 11 in Pula, Croatia. This year Boise State’s Shawn Garus will serve as the head coach for the Mountain West All-Stars, while junior Sierra Nobley will be a member of the team. Nobley is the fifth Bronco in the last four years to participate in this event joining Katelyn Kinghorn (2013), Sarah Baugh (2014), Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddy O’Donnell last summer.

This marks the third straight year that the Mountain West Conference has sent a team of all-stars to compete at the challenge. Ten of the 11 conference member schools are represented on the team with Boise State’s Shawn Garus serving as head coach assisted by Colorado State assistant coach Emily Hiza and Nevada assistant Visnja Djurdevic.

The European Global Challenge started 12 years ago in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a modest volleyball tournament with a few foreign teams has evolved into a 32-team international invitational featuring top teams in U17 and U22 divisions from around the world. In recent years the town of Pula, Croatia, has witnessed a volleyball showdown between youth and junior national teams from Russia, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Denmark. Add to that a mix of club and country federation teams from Romania, Germany, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Puerto Rico. In addition, USA regional high performance, youth national, junior national, and collegiate national teams have all traveled across the globe to compete against some of the best youth volleyball teams in the world.

The tournament officially kicked off on Sunday, July 10th, with an opening ceremony honoring past Olympians in attendance from various countries at the edge of one of the last remaining fully intact Roman Coliseums in the world dating back to 68 AD. During the team’s stay in Croatia they will participate in daily tournament play that will be combined with historic sightseeing and beach relaxation.

The team has competed in a few warm-up matches last week and over the weekend in preparation for today’s opening day.
