BOISE, Idaho - Boise State, the defending Mountain West Conference champion, announced its 2017 volleyball schedule today featuring three teams that finished 2016 ranked in the AVCA top-25 coming to Boise. The Broncos will host two nonconference tournaments this fall featuring the Minnesota Golden Gophers who were ranked as high as No. 1 last season before finishing at No. 3, as well as BYU who finished No. 8 and Missouri who ended at No. 16.

In all, Boise State will host 21 matches including the two tournaments. The Broncos will play in 15 of those 21 contests which features six nonconference matches and the nine Mountain West encounters.

The Broncos will opened by hosting its annual scrimmage at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19.

The regular season begins with Boise State on the road Aug. 25-26 at Tempe, Ariz., where its will face North Dakota State, Weber State and Arizona State in the Sun Devil Classic.

The Blue and Orange then returns home for Labor Day weekend to host the Boise State Invitational Aug. 31 through Sept 2. The Broncos will open the tournament with BYU on Thursday night, Aug. 31, then follow with matches versus Sacramento State on Friday and Missouri Saturday night following the Boise State versus Troy football game that afternoon in Albertsons Stadium. BYU and Missouri competed in the NCAA Tournament last fall with both the Cougars and Tigers reaching the round of 16 before falling.

Week three has Boise State on the road to northern California for the UC Davis Invitational at Davis, Calif., Sept. 8-9. The Broncos will take on Santa Clara, UC Davis and Portland State, respectively, during the two-day event. Boise State defeated the Santa Clara Broncos last fall in Boise when SCU was ranked 17th, it was the first win ever for Boise State over a nationally ranked opponent.

The nonconference slate concludes with the Boise State Classic in Bronco Gym Sept. 15-16. The classic will be highlighted by the visiting Minnesota Golden Gophers who were ranked as high as No. 1 twice in 2016 and are coming off back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championship Final Four. The Broncos will open their tournament with Minnesota at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, followed by two big contests on Saturday versus Oregon State and instate-rival Idaho State.

Boise State will open defense of its 2016 MW championship with a pair of home matches against Fresno State on Sept. 21 and San Diego State Sept. 23.

Other home matches in league play include a big home match with Colorado State (Oct. 5) – a 2016 NCAA Tournament participant –, Wyoming (Oct. 7), UNLV (Oct. 26) – also 2016 NCAA Tournament participant, reaching the second round –, New Mexico (Oct. 28), Utah State (Nov. 7), Air Force (Nov. 9) and the home finale versus San Jose State on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Boise State’s single-match opponents in 2017 MW play are San Jose State in the home finale and Nevada in the next contest at Reno to close the regular season on Saturday Nov. 18.

The Mountain West will not sponsor a postseason tournament meaning the regular-season champion earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. New this coming year is the return of the postseason National Invitational Volleyball Championship (similar to basketball’s NIT). Last year the MW sent three teams to the NCAA Championship, the league will be pushing to repeat that success, as well as sending multiple teams to the NIVC.

The Broncos return the bulk of last year’s conference championship squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a win over 20th-ranked Western Kentucky before falling to the eventually national champions Stanford Cardinal on their home floor.
