BOISE, Idaho - Boise State Head Volleyball Coach Shawn Garus announced today the addition of five new recruits to the 2018 roster. Joining the Broncos this fall are one transfer Morgan Hughes (Willows, Calif.) from Saint Mary's and four current high school seniors in Jessie Brigham (Sisters, Ore.), Shae Duffy (Hood River, Ore.), Carly Moreno (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Hannah Köchl (Mieders, Austria). These additions bring the total number of newcomers for this fall to eight.
The addition of these five newcomers along with the three we signed in the fall gives us a tremendous recruiting class," said Garus. "I think that when we combined this class with the returning core group that it will help us compete with the top teams in the Mountain West Conference."
Morgan Hughes comes to Boise State by way of Saint Mary's College where she played one year for the Gaels of the West Coast Conference. Last year the 5-foot-10 middleblocker led the team and ranked seventh in the WCC for hitting percentage at .320, while recording a team-second-best 227 kills. She was also second on the team in blocks with 98, recorded double-digit kills eight times and hit at least .500 or better in six matches. Prior to Saint Mary's, Hughes played two years for Feather River College (community college) where she was named to the 2016 California All-State and All-Nor Cal Teams, as well as being named the Golden Valley Conference MVP. Hughes also played beach volleyball for both schools and will have one year of eligibility remaining in both sports at Boise State.
Jessie Brigham is currently a senior at Sisters High School in Sisters, Ore. The 5-foot-3 Brigham was a four-year starter at libero for the Outlaws' varsity team. She helped lead Sisters High to three Oregon 4A State Championships and one runner-up finish, four-straight Sky-Em League championships going undefeated at 10-0 each season and went a combined 50-6 overall during her final two years. Brigham is a three-time Oregon 4A All-State honoree, the last two on the first team, and a four-time All-Sky-Em League First Team member. She also competed for the Rimrock Volleyball Club of Sisters, Ore.
Shae Duffy is a senior at Hood River Valley High School in Hood River, Ore. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter was a four-year starter for the Eagles' varsity team. Duffy helped the Eagles to two-straight (junior and senior seasons) Oregon 5A State Tournament appearances and three-consecutive Columbia River Conference championships with a runner-up finish her freshman year. She is a two-time Oregon 5A All-State and All-State Tournament honoree, as well as a four-time all-conference player with the last three as a member of the first team. Duffy was named the Columbia River Conference MVP as a junior and team MVP her last three seasons. She played club ball for Excel Northwest of Vancouver, Wash.
Carly Moreno is finishing her senior year up at El Dorado High School in Yorba Linda, Calif., where she was a two-year starter and three-year member of the Golden Hawks' varsity team. Moreno helped lead El Dorado High to one state tournament appearance, three sectional tournaments and two-straight North Hills League championships going a combined 20-0 in league and 51-16 overall as a junior and senior. As a senior she tallied 395 kills, 22 blocks, 58 service aces and 143 digs. Moreno was honorable-mention all-league junior season and the conference MVP as a senior, as well as being named second-team All-Orange County and All-CIF Southern Section Division 2. She played her club ball for the Golden West Volleyball Club of Anaheim, Calif.
Hannah Köchl is a native of Mieders, Austria, where she has competed for Volleyball Club Tirol of Innsbruck from 2007-2018. Köchl helped lead Tirol to four-straight league championships, as well as a fifth and sixth place finish the last two years, respectively, in the Austrian Division I national tournament. The 5-foot-7 libero has been a four-year starter for Tirol.
