Garus to Coach MW All-Stars in Europe
May 19, 2016

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the third year in a row, the Mountain West will be sending an all-star women’s volleyball team to Europe. Leading the trip will be Boise State women’s volleyball coach and 2015 MW Coach of the Year Shawn Garus. Joining Garus on the travel squad from Boise State will be junior outside hitter Sierra Nobley. She will be the fifth Bronco to play in the European Global Challenge in the last four years.

Other Broncos who have made the trip include: Katelyn Kinghorn who was a member of a mountain region team in 2013; as well as Sarah Baugh (2014), Maddy O’Donnell (2015) and Katelyn Oliver (2015) who have all represented the Mountain West

Twelve Mountain West student-athletes make up the team that will travel to Maribor, Slovenia, for three days of training sessions and friendly matches against national teams from the region. From July 10-14, the team will compete in the 2016 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, featuring junior national and club teams from throughout Europe. Bring It Promotions, under the ownership of Tim Kelly, is managing the Mountain West all-star trip and has been running the Global Challenge tournament for 12 years. BIP has been coordinating overseas University tours since 1997. The last two Mountain West squads have each placed third in the Brijuni Division at the Global Challenge.

The Mountain West all-star team includes two setters, one libero, four middle blockers and five outside/opposite hitters from 10 of the 11 MW member institutions. It will be the first time that a representative from the Air Force Academy will be participating as a team member. Elizabeth Pennington will be using her three-week leave period this summer to compete with the all-star team. Pennington will be joined on the team by two-time All-Mountain West honoree Sierra Nobley (Boise State) and 2015 All-Conference team members Madison Morell from Nevada and Deja Harris from San Diego State. Garus will be assisted by Colorado State assistant coach Emily Hiza and Nevada volunteer assistant Vish Djurdjevic.
