USAV Press Release: USA Volleyball Tryout

Sierra's Jersey Number: W32

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (3/2/2017) - Boise State junior Sierra Nobley is headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend to participate in open tryouts for the U.S. National Women’s Volleyball Team this weekend. This is the second time that Nobley is taking part in the open tryout process having done so as a freshman in the spring of 2015 as well.

Nobley will be one of an estimated 240 individuals representing 81 colleges and 10 high schools competing March 3-5 for a spot in one of the U.S. Women’s National Team Programs. She is one of 11 players from the Mountain West Conference taking part in this event. Athletes will be bidding for spots not only in the Women’s National Team gym, but also positions on the U.S. Collegiate National Team Programs, both domestic and international.

“I’m really excited for Sierra to go to the USA tryout,” said coach Shawn Garus. “This will be her second time there. I thought she performed well the first time, but now with the experience of having been there before I think Sierra knows what to expect and she is ready to go there and compete for a position with the national team.”

Following the conclusion off the tryout on Sunday the junior outside hitter will be notified in about a month on whether she has been selected to particopate in this summer's national team programs.

“I feel that it is one of the goals of our program to create opportunities for our kids to not only play a very competitive schedule, but to create opportunities like this participating in the national team tryouts and to compete with the Mountain West All-Star Team during the summer,” Garus said. “It is important for our players to be able to play at a high level outside of our regular season and Sierra definitely is one of the higher performing players in our gym and the conference overall. She deserves to be on this stage where the national team coaches can she her as a potential prospect. I think they will like what they see and I expect her to perform extremely well this weekend.”

The native of Scottsdale, Ariz., is a two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American (2015 and 2016), a two-time AVCA All-Region Honoree and was honorable mention all-region as a freshman. She is the reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, a three-time All-MW honoree and was the MW Freshman of the Year in 2014.

Nobley has started every match during her career to date. This past season she capped off her junior campaign with a league-high 18 double-doubles, including two during the NCAA Tournament.

Last fall she led the MW and ranked 12th in the NCAA for kills per set at 4.58, led the conference and was 16th in the nation for total kills with 522, led the MW and was 13th nationally in points per set at 5.17, and led the league and ranked 15th in NCAA for total points.

Nobley set the school record for kills in a season with 522 and moved into second on the career list with 1,467, 43 short of the school record. Her 4.58 kills per set this year ranks second in program history behind her mark from 2015. Nobley is now the career leader at Boise State for career kills per set at 4.47, well above the second place mark of 3.67 kps.
