LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Alyssa Gammel and Taylor Murphey combined for 36 kills as Boise State knocked off the UNLV Rebels in five sets 19-25,25-18,30-28,16-25,15-12 in a Mountain West Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Las Vegas. After dropping the first set 25-19, the Broncos rallied to take the contest in five sets including a win in the decisive fifth set to claim the victory in their final road match of the year. The win improves Boise State’s record to 13-16 overall and 7-12 in conference, while UNLV fell to 16-12 and 11-7 in league.
Gammel led Boise State with a season-high 19 kills hitting a solid 30.9 percent versus the Rebels. The junior completed her team best ninth double-double on the season when she added 19 digs to her kill total. Murphey followed Gammel with 17 kills, hitting 35.9 percent to go with seven digs and a season-high six blocks to tie her career best total.
Brittany Reardon was the third Bronco in double digit kills with 10 as she hit 42.1 percent, the redshirt-junior also matched Murphey’s six blocks as the two tied for the team lead. Casey Rose and Sarah Baugh teamed-up to guide the team’s offensive attack dishing out 31 and 29 assists, respectively. Hannah Hubbard led four Broncos in double-digit digs with 22 followed by Gammel’s 19, Sarah Horton’s 13 and Rose’s 12 to give the senior setter her fifth double-double of the season.
Boise State hit 20.5 percent as a team with 65 kills, 64 assists, two service aces, 83 digs and 10 blocks. UNLV finished the afternoon out hitting the Broncos at 27 percent. The Rebels tallied 74 kills, 68 assists, two aces, 79 digs and nine blocks. Sekola Falemaka led UNLV with 23 kills hitting 37.3 percent, followed by Madeline Westman with 16 kills.
The win gave the Broncos a measure of revenge against the Rebels who defeated the blue and orange in five sets at Boise earlier this fall. Boise State will conclude the 2013 campaign this coming Friday when they host the Nevada Wolf Pack at 8 p.m. in Bronco Gym. That match will wrap up a busy Friday for Bronco sports following a doubleheader basketball day featuring the two hoops teams in Taco Bell Arena before hand.
