BOISE, Idaho - Boise State was dominating in a straight-set victory 25-23, 25-14, 25-14 over San Jose State in a Mountain West Conference volleyball match Saturday night in Boise. After a tight opening set the Broncos took control with decisive 11-point wins in the final two periods to defeat the Spartans 3-0, it also gave the blue and orange a season sweep over San Jose State. Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon led the Broncos with 11 kills apiece as Boise State improved to 12-15 overall and 6-11 in league play. The loss drops SJSU to 8-19 on the year and 5-11 in MW action.
“I am really pleased with the way the team bounced back after the tough loss (to Fresno State 3-1) Thursday night,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “We struggled a little in the opening set but took control of the match in the final two sets against a good San Jose State team. I was really happy with the play of Alyssa (Gammel) and Britt (Reardon) tonight and the way they led our team on the floor. It was good to see our team come out and compete hard to get the win.”
Reardon hit an impressive percentage against the Spartans at 61.1 percent with 11 kills and no hitting errors, she also added four blocks to her tally on the evening. Gammel tied Reardon’s kill total of 11 while hitting 28 percent to go with six digs. Taylor Murphey followed the duo with seven kills and one block.
Maddy O’Donnell had the team-high in blocks with five, two were solos, and added three kills and four digs. Sarah Baugh recorded a high of 19 assists followed by Casey Rose with 15, while Hannah Hubbard chipped in defensively with a team-best 14 digs.
Boise State won the opening set by two points. The period saw 13 ties and seven lead changes as momentum swung back and forth. The Broncos held a set-high four point lead at 19-15 and looked to have the frame in control when the Spartans rallied to take the lead twice before it was over at 21-20 and 23-22. Down one the Broncos came back with three straight points on a kill by Murphey, block assists by Sarah Horton and Reardon, and a set winning kill by Horton to steal the win.
The next two sets saw the Broncos pull away from San Jose State midway through each period to take relatively easy victories to claim the match in straight sets.
Boise State finished the night hitting 27.8 percent for 44 kills, the stat line also included 42 assists, one service ace, 51 digs and 10 blocks. Mary Alice O’Reilly led the Spartans with a team-high eight kills followed by Hanah Blume with seven. San Jose State was held to 4.6 percent hitting, 30 kills, 28 assists, two service aces, 42 digs and two blocks.
