ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Boise State fell in four sets (16-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-17) Thursday night on the road in Albuquerque, N.M., to the New Mexico Lobos in a Mountain West Conference match. Boise State opened the contest fast winning set one in commanding fashion leading the entire way before claiming the nine-point set win. Unfortunately, the Lobos regrouped to edge the Broncos in set two, then put the match away on three straight set wins. Taylor Murphey led Boise State with 13 kills followed by Alyssa Gammel’s 11 and Maddy O’Donnell’s 10. The Broncos fall to 11-13 overall and 5-9 in conference, while New Mexico moved to 19-5 on the year and 9-4 in MW play.
Boise State stormed out to a quick start racing to a 7-1 lead in set one, then cruised to the victory. The second set was tight the entire way before the Lobos held on for a two-point 25-23 win to tie the match score at one set each heading into the break. The set two victory shifted momentum to UNM who came out determined following the intermission to win the final two sets. The Lobos clinched the match victory with a 7-1 run to win set four 25-17.
Murphey hit 26.7 percent on her way to a team-high 13 kills. Gammel followed with her 11 kills in addition to six digs, while freshman Maddy O’Donnell continued her mid-season success with 10 kills as she hit a career-high 44.4 percent.
Senior setter Casey Rose led the team in assists with 29 followed by Sarah Baugh with 19. Hannah Hubbard recorded a team-best 14 digs to edge Rose who had 13. The Broncos hit 25.4 percent in the contest for 56 kills, they also had 54 assists, three service aces, 52 digs and three blocks.
Mountain West kill-leader Chantele Riddle led the Lobos on the night hitting 29.5 percent for a team-high 18 kills to go with four blocks. Cassie House led three others in double digit kills finishing with 13, followed by Julia Warren with 12 and Lexi Ross with 11 and a team-high six blocks.
Boise State will continue its weekend road trip on Saturday when the Broncos take on the Air Force Falcons in Colorado Springs, Colo., at 6 p.m. in Falcon Court at East Gym on the academy’s campus.
