BOISE, Idaho - Boise State volleyball’s attempt to rally from two sets down came up short in a 3-1 loss to New Mexico on Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym. After struggling to hit the ball with consistency during the first two sets, Boise State rallied to cut the deficit to one with a third set victory to stay alive in the contest. Unfortunately, the Broncos could not maintain that momentum in the fourth as UNM regrouped to claim the victory 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22.

Boise State was led by senior Sierra Nobley who hit 27.9 percent and tallied a team-high 18 kills (nine in the third set rally), one dig and three blocks. Janell Walley followed with 10 kills, one service ace, four digs and two blocks. Jaymee-Lee Bulda recorded her eighth double-double of the year on 33 assists and 16 digs, both team highs.

Boise State struggled hitting (.136) the ball in the first two sets, while New Mexico countered by hitting a solid 39.4 percent to go up 2-0 in the match. Walley led the Broncos with eight kills in the opening sets.

Set three was the Broncos led by Nobley who had nine kills and hit 40 percent in the period. Tied at 6-6, Boise State surged with a 3-0 run ─ including two kills by Nobley ─ and never trailed again. The Broncos stretched the advantage out to seven at 23-16, then held off the Lobos as they attempted to rally pulling to within 23-22. Boise State eventual won the set 25-22 with Kiley Lewis providing the decisive kill. The Broncos who hit less than 25 percent in each of the other three sets, hit 35.9 percent in the third.

The fourth was initially tight before the Lobos pulled away. Tied at 8, New Mexico rolled off a 6-1 run and never relinquished the lead after that. New Mexico was up 23-16 when the Broncos battled back on a 6-1 run and fought off three match points to close within 24-22. Lewis teamed up with Laney Hayes (2) and Keri Leake (1) to record three of the six points in the run on block assists. Unfortunately, the hole was too big for Boise State as UNM put it away with a 25-22 set victory.

The loss moved the Broncos to 13-11 overall and 6-6 in Mountain West Conference play. Next up for the Blue and Orange is a road trip to the top two teams in the conference, second-place Wyoming and league-leading 20th-ranked Colorado State.

Shawn Garus, Head Coach

On his overall thoughts of the match . . .

“I saw New Mexico play really well. I thought we were on our heels the entire time because New Mexico was being very aggressive.”

On the play of Boise State’s bench . . .

“I think Kiley (Lewis) did a good job. When she came in, she got a couple of nice blocks for us. Our big players -- Sabryn (Roberts), Sierra (Nobely), (Janell) Walley -- they all struggled to get going today. I just give credit to New Mexico for coming out really aggressive and applying pressure.”

Sierra Nobley: The senior outside hitter’s 18 kills was the 16th time this year she led the team ... she also extended her school and conference career kills record to 1,827 ... Nobley’s school record for career points is now at 2,047.0, 18 short of tying the MW record.

Jaymee-Lee Bulda: The senior setter recorded her eighth double-double of the year on 33 assists and 16 digs, it is the 15th in her career.

Maddi Osburn: The senior libero pushed her school record for career digs to 1,666 with 15 against the Lobos.
