Volleyball Holds Off Nevada for Five Set Road Win

RENO, Nev. - Boise State used a 7-0 run in the fifth set Thursday night to hold off the Nevada Wolf Pack 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 23-25 and 15-10 in a Mountain West Conference volleyball match at Reno, Nev. The contest was a battle as Boise State could not put Nevada away. The teams traded momentum and sets with the Broncos winning the first, third and fifth frames to survive the scare and record their third conference road victory. Trailing 10-8 in the decisive fifth set the Broncos rallied with seven unanswered points, capped by a Alyssa Gammel service ace for match point.  

The win improves Boise State to 9-9 overall and 3-5 in MW play. The Broncos now return home for the first of a five match homestand on Sunday when they host Air Force at 7 p.m.

Sarah Horton led the team with a season-high 19 kills while hitting 26.1 percent to go with eight digs and one block. Gammel was close behind tying her season-high for kills with 17 as she hit 31.6 percent. The junior also recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 16 digs to go with her kill total.

Taylor Murphey was also big for the Broncos Thursday night recording 13 kills and three blocks, tying Brittany Reardon for the team-high in blocks. Katelyn Kinghorn added six kills and two blocks against the Wolf Pack, but two kills and one block came during the decisive 7-0 fifth set run.

Senior setter Casey Rose moved into ninth-place on the Boise State career list for assists with a team-high 31 at Nevada to give her a total of 1,704. Sophomore Sarah Baugh followed in the assist category with 25, while Hannah Hubbard added a team-best 19 digs.

Boise State hit 28.1 percent with 68 kills, 64 assists, three service aces, 59 digs and seven blocks. Nevada finished the match hitting 24.8 percent with 62 kills, 57 assists, five aces, 54 digs and six blocks. Nevada played only eight players but four had either 14 or 12 kills. Leading the Wolf Pack were Grace Anxo, Madison Morell and Sam Willoughby with 14 each followed by Tessa Lea’ea with 12.
