Boise State Downs CSU Bakersfield in Four
Harden leads team with 21 kills while Stevens adds 12 blocks.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Liz Harden led Boise State to a four-set 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 28-26 victory at CSU Bakersfield Saturday night in a nonconference volleyball match in the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif. Harden hit 40.9 percent with 21 kills to lead the Broncos followed by Alyssa Gammel with 13 kills. Leah Stevens recorded a team-best and career-high 12 blocks in the contest, tying for the second most in Boise State history.

The Broncos won the first, third and fourth sets to improve to 9-10 overall on the year, while CSUB fell to 7-10. Boise State will be back in action this week when the Broncos host Mountain West rivals San Diego State on Thursday and Nevada Saturday night.

Liz Harden led Boise State to a 25-23 set one victory with six kills and three blocks to give the Broncos an early edge. Boise State opened the period strong maintaining a comfortable four to seven point lead most of the way before holding off a late Roadrunner rally as the Broncos took a 1-0 match lead with the win.

The second set was all CSU Bakersfield as the Roadrunners led nearly the entire way and eventually defeated the Broncos by four 25-21 to even the match heading into the break. Harden led Boise State during the loss with six kills matching her total from the first period.

Boise State used a 9-1 run to seize momentum in the third set that was tight early. Tied at 12 all, the Broncos used their run to storm out to a 21-13 lead as they cruised to a 25-16 win in the set and a 2-1 advantage in the match. Gammel and Harden each had four kills to lead the blue and orange to the win.

Gammel led Boise State to a 28-26 win in the decisive fourth set with five kills and two blocks. The period was a battle throughout with 17 ties and 11 lead changes before the Broncos prevailed in extra points. Boise State's Gammel and Taylor Murphey teamed up to score the final two points, respectively, of the match with kills giving Boise State the road win in Bakersfield.

Harden finished the contest with 21 kills and four blocks to lead Boise State with 23 points. Gammel followed with 13 kills, three assists, six digs and three blocks for 14.5 points, while Stevens had a monster night defensively coming away with 12 blocks to go with four kills. Casey Rose guided the team's attack with a team-high 35 assists to go with 11 digs, one kill and one block. Kersti Whitney edged Rose's dig total by one finishing with 12 on the night.  

As a team, Boise State finished the match hitting .258 percent with 52 kills, 49 assists, two service aces, 38 digs and a season-high 18.5 blocks. CSUB countered with .201 percent hitting with 60 kills, 56 assists, five aces, 53 digs and 11 blocks. Debora Araujo led the Roadrunners with 18 kills and five blocks, followed by Shayna Guitare with 13 kills and Kelsee Sawyer with 11.
