BOISE, Idaho - Boise State fell in four sets (25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22) Saturday night at home to the New Mexico Lobos in a Mountain West volleyball match at Bronco Gym. Boise State knew it would have its hands full when it hosted the Lobos but that did not deter the Broncos who hung with UNM through four tight sets. In the end it was New Mexico’s 35.9 percent hitting that gave the Lobos the edge over Boise State who hit 19.3 percent.
Sarah Horton led three Broncos in double figure kills with 13 followed by Alyssa Gammel with 12 and Taylor Murphey with 10. The loss moves Boise State to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in league play, while New Mexico improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the MW.
The Broncos opened the match strong leading most of the way in the first set before the Lobos rallied to tie the score at 19 all, then took the lead for good on the next point. New Mexico eventually took the opening set 25-22 over the Broncos behind 45.5 percent hitting in the frame.
The second set also saw Boise State take an early lead, this time the Broncos held on to it hitting a match-high 25 percent. The Broncos evened the match score at 1-1 with a 25-20 win over the Lobos.
The third set was close initially before the Lobos used a 5-1 run to break a 10 all tie and take control. Boise State attempted to rally but could not catch the visitors as UNM won the set by five at 25-20 to take a 2-1 match lead. Set fourth was just as tight as the other three with New Mexico slowly taking control and Boise State attempting to rally before falling 25-22.
Horton finished the night with her fourth double-double of the year with 13 kills and 10 digs to go with two assists and five blocks. Gammel hit 25.8 percent to collect her 12 kills, adding one service ace, eight digs and two blocks to her totals on the night.
Casey Rose recorded a team-high 22 assists followed closely by Sarah Baugh with 21. Hannah Hubbard edged Horton for the team-high dig honors with 11.
Boise State finished the night hitting 19.3 percent with 55 kills, 51 assists, six aces, 42 digs and eight blocks. New Mexico hit 35.9 percent with 61 kills, 59 assists, one ace, 52 digs and eight blocks. Chantele Riddle led the Lobos with 20 kills followed by Julia Warren and Cassie House with 14 each.
The Broncos will be back in action this Monday night when they host their final nonconference match of the year against the Grand Canyon Antelopes at 7 p.m. in Bronco Gym.
