BOISE, Idaho - Sabryn Roberts (12) and Kiley Lewis (10) combined for 22 kills to lead Boise State to a sweep over San Diego State 25-22, 25-16, 25-18 in a Mountain West volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Bronco Gym. The sweep is the third straight for Boise State who improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in league play, San Diego State fell to 6-9 and 0-2 MW.

Boise State hit 34.3 percent in the first period and 29.7 percent in the third. SDSU did not hit above 20 percent in any of the sets.
The first set saw the Broncos pull away early stretching a 7-4 advantage out to 13-4 on six straight Janell Walley serves. The 6-0 run saw Laney Hayes (2), Kiley Lewis (2) and Jaymee-Lee Bulda tally five kills to go with one error by SDSU resulting in a match-high nine-point 13-4 advantage.
However, San Diego State slowly fought back closing to within two on four occasions late in the set with the last coming at 24-22. The decisive point went to the blue and orange following a ball handling error by the Aztecs to give the Broncos a 25-22 win.
The second set remained close initially. Tied at 10-10, Boise State slowly began to pull away behind a 6-2 run. Walley recorded a service ace to go with a pair of Bronco blocks, the first by Hayes and Bulda, the second was Hayes and Roberts to put the Broncos up 16-12.
Up two at 17-15 in set two, Boise State closed out the period by rolling off an 8-1 run behind five points from Roberts who tallied three kills, a block and a service ace to give the Broncos set point at 24-16. The final set-winning point came off a hitting error by the Aztecs as Boise State claimed a 2-0 lead in the match score.
The final stanza also went to the home side. However, the Aztecs led by two early on before the Broncos regrouped. Tied at 8-8, Boise State used a 5-1 run to take control up 13-9. Lewis had two kills, Bulda and Walley one each, while Maddi Osburn chipped in with a service ace during that decisive run.

WHAT THEY SAID
Assistant Coach Candy Murphy
On starting conference play at 2-0 . . .
“It is huge to start conference play off 2-0, especially with a win over an extremely physical San Diego State squad with a lot of great athletes who have the ability to beat anyone in the conference on a given day.”
On the team’s effort against San Diego State . . .
“I think we did a really good job of just working hard throughout the match, in addition to having a really balanced attack from our team across the board. We also played great defensively against SDSU which was a big impact in how this match turned out.”
On Maddi Osburn breaking the school’s career digs record . . .
“Maddi is a phenomenal defender, she’s one of the most competitive kids we have had in our program. Defensively she is outstanding and to break the digs record is great for her, especially since she did it primarily in three years as the libero, she did not start as a freshman playing behind Hannah Hubbard. She comes everyday to the gym and works hard, she sets the standard defensively for this team.”
On her play today against San Diego State . . .
“I just wanted to be very consistent, we knew what San Diego State is capable of, it is always a battle every time we play them. I just wanted to be not to high, not to low, just consistent against them today.”
On starting conference off at 2-0 . . .
It’s awesome, it’s the best start that we’ve had in this conference, we’ve never been 2-0 in the MW. I am really looking forward to the rest of the matches.”
