BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State volleyball lost to Utah State in four sets (26-24, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17) at home in a Mountain West match at Bronco Gym Saturday night. In the second meeting of the week against the Aggies the Broncos found themselves in a hole early. Boise State attempted to rally forcing a fourth set but came up short as the blue and orange fell to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Senior Sarah Horton led Boise State with 13 kills followed by Alyssa Gammel with 10.
Boise State played solid against the Aggies tonight but could not get the crucial point when it needed it. In the opening frame the Broncos and Aggies were tied at 15 when Utah State rolled off a 5-0 run to go up 20-15. Boise State rallied tying the match at 24 but was unable to close it out as USU held on for a two-point win.
In the second set the Broncos had momentum up 18-14. Unfortunately, the Aggies rallied with a 5-0 run to take control going up one and eventually took the set 25-21 for a 2-0 match lead.
The Broncos rallied coming out of the break to win the third set 25-18. Boise State led nearly the entire way as it force Utah State into a fourth set. The Aggies came out quick in the final frame and though the Broncos kept it close, Utah State slowly pulled away for the set win and 3-1 match victory.
Sarah Horton led the team with 13 kills to go with one assist and six digs. Gammel followed with 10 kills three assists, one service ace, nine digs and two blocks. Taylor Murphey added nine kills hitting 31.6 percent, she also had four blocks. Brittany Reardon and Katelyn Kinghorn each had eight kills, Reardon also recorded four kills while Kinghorn had two. Sarah Baugh led in assists with 25 followed by Casey Rose's 20, Hannah Hubbard finished with a team-high 15 digs.
Boise State finished the match hitting 20.9 percent with 56 kills, 54 assists, six aces, 46 digs and nine blocks. Utah State hit 31 percent with 55 kills, 49 assists, four aces, 42 digs and seven blocks. They had four players in double-digit kills led by Rachel Orr with 14, followed by Elle Brainard with 13, Tumua Etimani and Kaitlyn VanHoff each had 10.
