Boise State Comes Up Short at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - Boise State volleyball battled the Arizona Wildcats hard before falling in three sets 25-23, 26-24, 25-15 in the Arizona Desert Classic Friday night at Tucson, Ariz. Boise State lost the first two sets by a combined four points as they fought the Wildcats to the end before things got away from them in the third set. Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon led the Broncos with 10 kills apiece. The loss was the second of day for the Broncos as Boise State fell to 6-7 on the year.

Arizona took control of the first set early keeping the Broncos at bay with a two-to-three point lead. Slowly the Wildcats pulled out to a 20-13 lead with momentum going their way. Down seven, Boise State battled back with a 10-4 run, redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Kinghorn had a hand in five of the points, to make a set out of it drawing within one late at 24-23. Unfortunately, Arizona held on pulling out the two point 25-23 win.  

After Arizona scored the first point of set two, the Broncos took the lead and held onto it for most the period. Up four at 20-16, Boise State watched its lead evaporate as the Wildcats battled back. Arizona tied the set at 22 then after two set points handed the Broncos a 26-24 defeated on the third, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage in the match score heading into the break.  

After two tight sets, Boise State was unable to keep up with Arizona in the third set as the Wildcats came out fast to win by 10 at 25-15. Before the Broncos knew it they were down 12 at 19-7. They attempted to rally late pulling to within eight points at 23-15 but could get no closer.

Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon led the Broncos with 10 kills apiece, Reardon hit a season-high .750 percent (10-1-12). Kaitlyn Kinghorn had another solid match today recording six kills and career-high four blocks, Liz Harden added eight kills and hit .471 percent. Casey Rose and Sarah Baugh tied for the lead in assists with 18 each, while Fiona Jones led in digs with nine.

Boise State finished the night hitting .238 percent with 41 kills, 40 assists, four service aces, 30 digs and four blocks. Arizona hit .396 percent to go with 54 kills, 50 assists, two aces, 35 digs and eight blocks. Madi Kingdon led the Wildcats with 14 kills.

The Broncos have a big rematch with UC Irvine looming tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The two teams met in last week's championship match of the Boise State Invitational.
