BOISE, Idaho - Boise State closed the Courtyard Marriott Bronco Volleyball Classic with a straight-set sweep of Sacramento State Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym. The Broncos dominated the Hornets winning all three sets 25-11, 25-17, 25-16 as they finished the weekend 2-1 and improved to 5-4 overall heading into next week’s Mountain West Conference openers. Alyssa Gammel led the Broncos with 10 kills while hitting a season-high 40 percent, followed by Sarah Horton with nine kills and Aly Duffin with eight.
Boise State opened the match by rolling out to a two-set lead with a quick win in the opening frame followed by a tighter victory in the second. The Broncos were dominating offensively hitting 30.9 percent during the first two sets while holding the Hornets to 3.8 percent.
Coming out of the break the third set was close early on before the Broncos broke an 11-11 score open with a 6-1 run to take control. Boise State continued to slowly pull away down the stretch to claim a nine-point 25-16 set win to clinch the 3-0 match victory. Sarah Horton led the Broncos in the third set recording six kills on nine attempts with no errors to go with six digs.
Gammel and Horton led the team in the victory over the Hornets. Gammel recorded a team-high 10 kills and 10 digs, while Horton hit 44.4 percent for nine kills, as well as tallying two service aces, six digs and one block. Duffin was close behind with her third straight solid hitting performance over 40 percent (46.2 pct.), in addition to one assist, one ace and team-high (tied) four blocks.
The match saw a balanced offensive effort from the Broncos who also had Brittany Reardon and Taylor Murphy record seven kills apiece in the three set contest. Reardon hit an impressive 66.7 percent (7-1-9) in the match and added two blocks to her totals. Murphey hit 41.7 percent with one dig and one block. Casey Rose and Sarah Baugh guided the Boise State attack with 20 assists each, while Hannah Hubbard had a team-best 13 digs.
Boise State finished the contest hitting 39.1 percent with 46 kills, 43 assists, eight service aces, 39 digs and six blocks. Sacramento State hit 9.4 percent with 24 kills, 23 assists, four aces, 27 digs and one block. Lauren Aikels led the Hornets with 11 kills.
Aly Duffin, Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon led the team with standout performances throughout the three-day Courtyard Marriott Bronco Volleyball Classic and were named to the all-tournament team as a result. Duffin and Reardon led the four-team field in hitting percentage at 55.3 and 50 percent, respectively. Reardon was third overall in blocks amongst all the players, while Gammel finished ninth in kills and third in digs.
The tournament marks the end of the preseason schedule for Boise State as the Broncos open the 20-match Mountain West slate this coming week with two contests against the Utah State Aggies. Boise State will travel to Logan, Utah, on Wednesday, Sept. 18, then return home to host the Aggies at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in Bronco Gym.
