EVANSTON, Illinois - Boise State volleyball completed a sweep of two matches on the opening day of the Wildcat Challenge in Evanston, Ill., when the Broncos defeated Columbia 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 26-28, 25-22).  For the second match in a row the Broncos opened by winning the first two sets to take control of the contest. Columbia rallied to take the third set after holding off a Boise State comeback attempt. However, the Broncos regroup to take the fourth set in which they led nearly the entire way. The win improved Boise State to 3-2 overall with a match-up against Northwestern on the slate for Sunday morning.

Boise State nearly claimed its second straight set victory of the day when they rallied from five points down at 24-19 in set three. They fought off five straight set points for the Lions to tie the score at 24, then had two match points at 25-24 and 26-25. Unfortunately, Columbia regrouped to score three consecutive points to win the third set and force the match into a fourth, which the Broncos won 25-22.

Boise State had another solid hitting performance at 38.4 percent, all four sets saw the Broncos hit above 33.3 percent with a match-best 50 percent during the first frame. The blue and orange finished with 64 kills, 62 assists, five service aces, 52 digs and four blocks. Columbia countered by hitting 24.7 percent, good for 59 kills to go with 55 assists, five aces, 57 digs and one block.

Taylor Murphey led four Broncos in double-digit kills with 13 as she hit 33.3 percent and recorded three digs and one block. Brittany Reardon added 12 kills while hitting 55 percent, as well as a team-high four blocks. Sarah Horton added 12 kills, three service aces and seven digs, while Alyssa Gammel chipped in with 11 kills, one ace, 10 digs and one block. Casey Rose, senior setter, dished out 35 assists followed by Sarah Baugh with 17. Hannah Hubbard had a team-high 15 digs to lead the Bronco defensive efforts.
