BOISE, Idaho - The Broncos opened the Boise State Invitational with an impressive straight set 26-24, 25-11, 25-14 victory over Southern Utah Friday afternoon in Bronco Gym. After a tight first set, the Broncos imposed their will on the Thunderbirds to record their third consecutive straight set victory as Boise State improved to 4-4 on the year. Alyssa Gammel led the blue and orange hitting .360 percent with a team-high 13 kills, followed by Liz Harden with nine kills.

The opening set started with the Broncos slowly pulling out to a six-point advantage on several occasions, the last coming at 18-12. The set ended with Southern Utah making a game of it as the T-Birds rallied with an 8-2 run to tie the score at 20. SUU was unable to ever get the lead as Boise State held the Thunderbirds off for a hard fought 26-24 win. Gammel and Harden each recorded five kills in the set to lead the Broncos.

The second frame started tight before Boise State came alive for a dominating 14-point, 25-11, victory. Up two at 6-4, the Broncos began to pull away as they stretched their advantage to nine points at 16-7. After what happened in the first set, Boise State refused to let up as they cruised to the win for a 2-0 match lead going into the break. Harden had a team-best three kills.

Boise State opened the third set by running out to a 3-0 lead in a set they would eventually win by 11 points at 25-14. The Broncos hit .429 percent in the final set as they ran away from the Thunderbirds. Gammel recorded six kills in the set to lead the blue and orange.

It was a solid team effort for the Broncos who were led by Gammel with 13 kills, two service aces, seven digs and one block. Harden followed up with nine kills while hitting a team and season-high .667 percent. Brittany Reardon and Leah Stevens each added five kills, while Taylor Murphey came in with four. Reardon led the team with four blocks, Fiona Jones and Murphey had two apiece. Casey Rose had a team-best 20 assists followed by Sarah Baugh with 18. Defensively, Kersti Whitney led Boise State with 11 digs.

Boise State finished the match hitting .403 percent with 40 kills, 38 assists, eight aces, 36 digs and five blocks. Southern Utah hit .188 percent to go with 32 kills, 30 assists, three aces, 26 digs and three blocks. Ana Mailoto led the Thunderbirds with 16 kills and 10 digs.
