EVANSTON, Illinois - The Boise State volleyball team opened the Wildcat Challenge at Northwestern University with an impressive straight-set win over 2012 NCAA participant Belmont University. It was the first match of the tournament for both teams and the Broncos wasted little time taking control winning the first two sets decisively 25-14 and 25-16. The third set saw Belmont (1-4) regroup and battle to extend the match, but Boise State was up to the task and held the Bruins off with a 25-22 set three victory. The win improved the Broncos record to 2-2 overall with a match later today against Columbia (0-0) from the Ivy League.

The Broncos used a 4-0 run midway through the third set to break open a 16 all tie for a four point advantage. They never relinquished the lead down the stretch as they put away the Ohio Valley Conference East Division preseason favorite in three sets for the match victory.

“I was extremely happy with the way we played, it shows our hard work this past week in practice has helped us improve,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “Belmont is a quality program and has everyone back from last year’s team that went to the NCAA tournament. We had several players pick their game up in this match, now we need to carry it into this afternoon’s match with Columbia. The return of Alyssa Gammel gives us another weapon that teams now have to account for, which opens up our other attackers.”
Boise State’s attack was so efficient that the team recorded the seventh-best match hitting percentage all-time and the fourth-best for a three set match during the rally scoring era (since 2001). The Broncos recorded 36 kills with five errors on 74 attempts, to go with 31 assists, five service aces, 29 digs and five blocks. Belmont was held to 21.2 percent hitting with 33 kills.

Junior middle blocker Brittany Reardon led the Broncos against the Bruins with seven kills while hitting 38.5 percent, with one block. Taylor Murphey, a junior outside hitter, added six kills while hitting a career-best 62.5 percent during the match. Junior middle blocker Aly Duffin matched Murphey’s kills total of six as she hit 50 percent from the court, in addition to recording one service ace, three digs and two blocks.

Three other Broncos added five kills each including Alyssa Gammel who played for the first time this fall after missing last weekend because of injury. The junior outside hitter hit 25 percent and added a team-best nine digs along with one service ace. Senior Sarah Horton also had five kills as she hit 28.6 percent to go with four digs and tied for a team-high three blocks. Katelyn Kinghorn was the third Bronco with five kills as she hit a impressive 55.6 percent from the floor in addition to having three blocks.

Senior setter Casey Rose recorded a team-high 16 assists to go with two kills and three digs. Sarah Baugh, a sophomore setter, followed with 12 assists and six digs.
