Boise State Loses Tough One At Sacramento State

Broncos fall in four sets to the Hornets at Sacramento State Invitational.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Boise State dropped a hard fought battle in four sets 32-30, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17 to Sacramento State Friday night in Sacramento. The Broncos found themselves in a hole after losing two tight sets that went to extra points to open the contest before rallying to win the third. Unfortunately, after the Broncos battled back they came up short in the fourth set as Boise State fell to 1-3 on the year. Alyssa Gammel led the Broncos against the Hornets with 19 kills.  

Boise State lost a tough set one that went back and forth with 22 ties and seven lead changes. The largest lead was three points by Sacramento State early. Both teams had several chances to take the victory before the Hornets rallied from one down at 29-28 for the 32-30 win. Gammel led the Broncos with seven kills followed by four each from Brittany Reardon and Taylor Murphey.

After Sacramento State scored the first point of the second set, the Broncos stormed out to a 7-1 lead. Up 8-2 Boise State went through a lull allowing the Hornets to get back into the set taking a 10-9 lead.  The teams went on to trade nine more leads before Sacramento State claimed a 26-24 win giving the home team a 2-0 match lead heading into the break.

Boise State came out after the break needing to win set three. After falling behind early the Broncos rallied from four points down to win the frame 25-19. Trailing 17-16 Boise State out scored the Hornets 9-2 for the victory, cutting its match deficit to one at 2-1.

The fourth set was close until midway when Sacramento State pulled away. Down 13-10 the Broncos were out scored 6-1 by the Hornets. Boise State fought hard to get back into the set but ran out of time as Sacramento State closed the match out with a 25-17 set win  and a 3-1 victory in the match.

Alyssa Gammel led Boise State with 19 kills while hitting .235 percent. Taylor Murphey was second with a career-high 11 kills to go with three blocks, while Brittany Reardon and Liz Harden added 10 kills apiece. Reardon hit a team and career-high .588 (10-0-17) percent. Leah Stevens had a big night blocking with a career-high seven, in addition to six kills. Sarah Baugh recorded a career-best 29 assists, Casey Rose was next with 21. Defensively, Kersti Whitney led with 17 digs followed by Gammel with 14, Rose with 12 and Fiona Jones with 10.

Boise State hit .205 percent (60-25-171) on the night with 60 kills, 57 assists, six service aces, 69 digs and eight blocks. Sacramento State countered with .272 percent (60-16-162) hitting to go with 60 kills, 58 assists, three aces, 73 digs and 16 blocks. The Hornets were led by Jessie Genger and Janelle Curry with 20 kills apiece.

Boise State will be back in action Saturday with two matches on the slate beginning with Saint Mary's (Calif.) at 11:30 a.m. (Mountain) followed by Morgan State at 6:30 p.m. (MT).  Saint Mary's defeated Morgan State in straight sets in the first match Friday.
