Harden leads Broncos with 12 kills.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Boise State turned in a solid performance Saturday morning but fell in the end 25-17, 27-25, 25-20 to the Saint Mary's Gaels at the Sacramento State Invitational in northern California. The Broncos played the nationally prominent Gaels tight throughout but came up short against a team that is receiving top-25 votes. Liz Harden and Alyssa Gammel kept Boise State in the match recording 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The loss moves the Broncos to 1-4 on the year.

"I was happy with the team kept battling back in th ematch," siad head coach Shawn Garus. "But we cannot afford to start matches slow and giving teams two set leads. It is two hard to come back from that large of a deficit against quality teams. I was happy with our fight, but we still have work to do to get where we want to be entering conference."

Boise State played from behind throughout the opening set rallying early from five down, 10-5, to tie the set at 12 all. However, the Gaels countered with an 8-2 run to seize control of the frame, eventually winning it 25-17.  

The second set saw the Broncos fall behind 15-9 early to the Gaels. However, Boise State refused to go down without a fight as the Broncos rallied to tie the match at 24 before Saint Mary's held them off for the 27-25 win and two set advantage. Harden kept Boise State in the set with six of her team-high 12 kills in the match.

The final set was tight most of the way with the Broncos leading the majority of it. Unfortunately, Boise State could not hold on as the teams traded six leads and were tied 16 times. The set was even at 17 when Saint Mary's seized control with a 5-0 run for a 22-17 lead, then finished it off out scoring the Broncos 8-3 down the stretch. Gammel and Harden led the team during the third set with five kills each.

Harden finished the match with a team-high 12 kills while hitting .308 percent. Gammel was close behind with 11 kills hitting a career-high .381 percent (11-3-21) to go with seven digs and one block. Brittany Reardon continues to hit at a high rate finishing the match at .455 percent, a season-high, she had six kills and a team-high four blocks as well. Leah Stevens chipped in with seven kills while hitting a season-best .357 percent. Casey Rose led the team in assists with 23 followed by Sarah Baugh with 14 and Kersti Whitney with four. On the defensive side, Whitney led the team in digs with eight.

Boise State finished the contest hitting .257 percent as a team. The Broncos recorded 46 kills, 43 assists, four service aces, 33 digs and four blocks. Saint Mary's won the match with a hitting percentage of .436 and accumulated 47 kills, 46 assists, five aces, 35 digs and 12 blocks. Lauren Corp led the Gaels with 13 kills followed closely by Gabby Jolly with 12, both had five blocks apiece.

The Broncos will wrap-up the Sacramento State Invitational with an encounter versus the Morgan State Bears from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at 6:30 p.m. (Mountain) tonight.
